We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andres Soler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andres below.
Andres, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been a self-taught animator since I was about 13 or 14 years old. Art has always been a big part of my life; even as a kid, I was known as the class artist. I consistently received high marks in anything art-related, and my art teachers really appreciated my work. Alongside my passion for art, I’ve always been fascinated by technology. I learned how to navigate a computer quite early and was always finding new ways to learn online, even before platforms like YouTube became popular.
Andres, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an animator and visual artist, working across various mediums like 2D animation, stop motion, and motion graphics. My journey into this field started when I was a teenager, heavily influenced by my interest in Taekwondo. I was fascinated by the art form itself. It all changed when my cousin introduced me to a stick figure animation called “Xiao Xiao” by Zhu Zhiqiang, which was essentially a Flash video of stick figures engaged in choreographed fight scenes. I was instantly hooked and decided to make my own stick figure animations, which led me to dive into learning Flash animation and eventually discover Newgrounds. This platform opened the door to animating more extensive cartoon projects.
Today, I offer a wide range of services, not just in different animation styles but also in motion graphics, graphic design, and web/branding design. I tackle various creative challenges for my clients, whether they need a marketing campaign to boost sales, a website redesign, an engaging advertisement video, or even a music video. I aim to provide creative solutions that not only meet but exceed client expectations.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Many people might not realize just how meticulous and time-consuming animation can be, especially with frame-by-frame animation, which is what I specialize in. I also don’t always know what I’m going to create when I open up a new blank project file, it’s a creative journey each time; as I experiment and draw inspiration from various sources, the project begins to take shape. The most exhilarating part for me is nearing the completion of a project—seeing all the pieces come together. Additionally, the reactions from my clients when they see the final animation are incredibly rewarding. It reassures me that I’m ready to take on the next challenge and gain valuable experience with each project.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I recognize that NFTs have had mixed reactions and are still not well understood by the majority of the public. The internet is always evolving, and NFTs are part of this new frontier. I believe NFTs are here to stay wether we like them or not, but there is still a way to go before they are fully understood and accepted globally.
I’ve had a great experience with NFTs in recent years, including a project with G. Love called “Juice Gang” on OpenSea. I definitely plan to continue exploring more NFT projects in the future.
