Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andres Simonian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Andres, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to do what I do like everyone else, by taking classes and just doing it every single day. Class wasn’t enough so I looked for work in a theatre and was soon acting in plays and I went out of my way to look for short films which were the most accessible projects to me at the time. Knowing what I know now, I don’t think I’d change a single thing. Everything happened the way it had to for me to learn from my mistakes and get to where I am now. Maybe the most important skill for an actor is listening. We are all caught up in our bubbles but in a scene it is essential to receive every minute detail from our partners and listening is uber essential in any class you take, you must be like a sponge. An obstacle that stood in my way was money and time. But the obstacle is the way, I found a job that gave me the money and time to take class and put in that initial investment. Even though it was utterly exhausting, it was the down payment I put forward to have an easier time of it in the future.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Andres Simonian, I am an Argentinean American actor raised in Miami, currently living in LA. I got my start in theatre and independent short films and moved on to commercials and feature films. I’m climbing up like all fellow actors but you might have seen one or two of my commercials on TV. I guess what sets me apart that I’m proud of is that I always forged my own path. I found work in a theatre just by walking in and asking. I had a reel and a body of solid work before I even got my first agent. And I’m always happy to help my peers.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That this is an insurmountably hard career choice. That I should go the easier and steadier route. Life is hard as it is, and you can fail at something you’re not passionate about, so might as well give it your all at something you are. With perseverance and the right focus anything is possible. As long as your idea of success is something you can give yourself.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My one goal is to live off of doing what I love. All I want is to act and as long as I’m doing that at a professional level, I am happy.
