We were lucky to catch up with Andres Makishi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andres, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Yes, I’am, I think that if I had a normal life I would had more time for my personal life, but in art you really don’t have the luxury. All the time you are looking for a new project, ideas as a tattoo artist my tattoo session go for around 6-8 hours and then I have to go back home and keep working on new designs for clients or personal projects like painting. Being an artist is a lot of work but the final result is very satisfying.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I have been a tattoo artist since I was 18 years old, I am currently 26. The art world has been always part of my life because I come from a family of artists. After school I studied graphic design and graduated as first in class, then I started my tattooing carreer and began winning prizes in several tattoo conventions. My specialty are realism and microrealism tattoos, in black&grey and color. In my free time I paint portraits to improve my technique and apply it in my tattoo artwork. I am currently working in NYC at the amazing Inknation Studio NYC, where I had the honor to share with many talented artists globally recognized.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The main engine that I use is Instagram, but I also use Facebook, Tik Tok, Pinterested and I also have a personal website. To have a good reach to your objective audience is it important to know all these tools, nowadays you can not deny the importance they have and the impact they can have in your carreer. Everything is visal and you have to keep updating and doing new things to stay in the loop.
A funny story that I have back in 2017 is when I saw this portrait of a pet made by Dr Woo, artist from LA, the portrait was the size of a ring, I was so impressed by the piece, it had so many details which is very challenging for the limited and small area you are working on. That tattoo really insipired me and I started doing that style, this style really made a hit and I started getting many requests for this type of tattoos, I even got to tattoo many famous people from Peru because of it. Even when most of the tattoo community back then thought that these type of tattoos were not going to be a hit I took a chance and went for it. The decision that I made was because I was not afraid of doing something new, in the art world that we live in.we have to constantly keep evolving and open to new ideas and trends. I think this also applies to many other things in life, big risks can bring you big rewards.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The respect and recognition that I get from colleagues and customers really gives me that will to keep creating better and different things.
