We recently connected with Andres Garzas and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andres, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Working on the 2023 IndyCar series with NBC Sports and Studio City remains one of the most meaningful projects of my career. It was my first big opportunity as a producer with my own company, Burrito Films, and I also took on the role of cinematographer. This project pushed me to lead a diverse team while allowing me to capture the raw energy and human spirit behind the IndyCar action.
Our days were a whirlwind of activity—juggling field production, filming, and creating fun promos that brought the thrill of the season to life. With two filming teams out in the field at once, we covered everything from high-speed races to candid behind-the-scenes moments. We even played around with inventive ideas like the “TinyCars” series and “Tiny Mics,” which surprisingly connected really well with fans.
What made this experience so special wasn’t just the scale of the project, but the deep sense of teamwork involved. I brought in my team—those I trust and count on, my warriors—and they delivered amazing results. Coordinating two simultaneous shoots, all while working closely with drivers—some of whom are legends like Alexander Rossi, Tony Kanaan, and Will Power—was both exhilarating and challenging. It required us all to communicate clearly, think on our feet, and blend creative storytelling with technical know-how.
Seeing the final results was incredibly rewarding. Our content helped make the 2023 IndyCar season the most-watched in over a decade, and I felt proud knowing that our hard work made a real impact. For me, this project was a turning point. It was more than just a job—it was a lesson in the power of collaboration and creativity, and it reaffirmed how meaningful it is to tell stories that truly resonate with people.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to transform reality into something meaningful and lasting. Through the lens of a camera, I can take everyday moments, emotions, and ideas and elevate them into stories that resonate deeply with audiences. Whether it’s crafting a visually stunning scene for a film, capturing the raw energy of a live performance, or creating content that speaks to a brand’s essence, I see every project as an opportunity to make something timeless.
Throughout my career as a cinematographer, I have had the privilege of collaborating with visionary directors such as Adam Rush, Andy Rovira, Carlos Felipe, David Navarro, Esteban Arango, Francisco Lupini, Ian Harris, Ivan Mena Tinoco, Jaime Vaca, Jefrrey L Relf, Joe Tamanini, Juan Ros, Julio del Alamo, Kansas Bowling, Manolo Zota, Milcho, Neil Nuñez, Nicholas Pallos, Pablo Espada, Pedro Gonzalez Khun, Quinn Halleck, Sammy Albis, Sonia Bhalla, Space Monkeys, and Steven Tralongo, among others. These experiences allowed me to learn from and contribute to a multitude of diverse projects. I have also been mentored by legends like Dante Spinotti ASC, AIC, and Fernando Arguelles ASC, AEC, whose guidance has been invaluable. Working alongside such talented storytellers and under their mentorship has enriched my perspective, sharpened my craft, and reinforced my belief that storytelling holds the power to connect, inspire, and provoke thought.
My diverse body of work spans commercials, films, documentaries, and music videos, reflecting my dedication to impactful storytelling across various mediums. In advertising, I’ve crafted compelling narratives for marquee brands like Coca-Cola, Google Pixel 3, Disney, Samsung, Red Bull, Discovery, Vodafone, Toyota, Bernie Sanders, Miami Marlins, and many others, shaping campaigns that resonate widely.
My cinematic projects include thought-provoking films such as A Couple of Secrets, Sigma_001, Through the Breaking Glass, Infinite Being, Cuddly Toys, From Where It Hides, The Imperfect Picture, Dos Corazones, Lo Entenderá, A Nod to You, Refugio, Echo, Boudoir, Thoughts, among others.
In documentary filmmaking, I’ve explored titles like Life is Beautiful, Teaching Gardens, Las Constituyentes, PWC, Robert Is Here, the TV show Equals, and Comando Actualidad, bringing real-world stories and insights to the screen.
Within the realm of music videos, I have collaborated with artists such as Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Bizzarap, Residente, J. Balvin, Lil Wayne, Ray J, Emily Estefan, Pablo Alborán, Miguel Bosé, and more to create visually captivating and emotionally engaging content. This broad spectrum of work underscores my commitment to creating narratives that connect, inspire, and endure.
It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that the films and projects I’ve created over the years aren’t just consumed in the moment but continue to live on, impacting people long after their release. I strive to create work that matters—content that doesn’t just entertain but also communicates something real, authentic, and universally human. The idea that something I’ve created might inspire someone, shift their perspective, or simply give them a memorable experience is what drives me. It’s about leaving a legacy through my career as a filmmaker, one frame, one story, one project at a time, and knowing that in some way, I’ve contributed to shaping how people see and feel the world around them. That ongoing influence and ability to connect deeply with audiences is the true reward of being a creative.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the most defining moments of my journey has been recognizing patterns that were holding me back, healing from past experiences, and consciously transforming into a more intentional and grounded version of myself. This process wasn’t an overnight change but a deep, ongoing journey requiring resilience, self-reflection, and a willingness to confront my own limits.
A pivotal part of this personal transformation has been weaving meditation, martial arts, and a deeper connection with nature into my everyday routine. There was a time when the relentless pace of working in the film industry left little room for quiet reflection. I came to understand that I needed to carve out moments to pause, observe my thoughts, and let go of habits born out of fear or overthinking. Meditation became a sanctuary for me, and practicing martial arts added a physical discipline that complemented my mental journey. Reconnecting with Mother Nature offered another way to slow down, regain balance, and face challenges with clear, calm insight.
Nature has also been a powerful teacher in my life. Spending time outdoors, away from screens and deadlines, reminds me of the bigger picture. There’s a sense of humility and inspiration that comes from observing the rhythm of the natural world—the simplicity of the wind, the resilience of a tree, the vastness of the ocean. These moments have grounded me and given me a renewed perspective on what truly matters.
Through this journey, I’ve discovered that by healing internally, I’ve been able to bring more authenticity and purpose to my work. I approach projects now not just with technical expertise but with a calmness and intention that comes from a deeper connection to myself, the discipline of martial arts, and the world around me. This transformation has allowed me to create content that resonates on a more meaningful level—stories that not only entertain but also inspire and endure.
Resilience, for me, isn’t just about pushing through challenges but about learning, growing, and evolving in harmony with both my inner self and the environment around me. It’s this blend of introspection, physical discipline through martial arts, and connection to nature that has made my journey so rewarding and continues to shape the stories I tell.
