We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andres Garcia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andres, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Growing up, me and my family bonded over sports. I used to play soccer and my parents taught me 2 things. It´s not over until it´s over, and to keep showing up. My parents always told me to keep fighting and keep going until the end, no matter what the scoreboard said. They said, as you are in sports, you are in life. As long as you keep fighting until the end, like in soccer, you can do whatever you want in this life. That gave me a drive and motivation. I really believe that if you set your mind to t, you can do whatever you want. For me, that something is being an actor.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I´ve always loved movies. That´s something I´ve always known. So I would spend a lot of time watcing trailers of movies that were coming out, because that got me really excited. Finally, one day, one of those Behind the scenes clips came up. I watched it, and for the first time I thought of acting as a carreer path. I was shy, so I didn´t want to take acting classes. I was just afraid I wouldn´t fit in with a new group. But, my mom pushed me and said “If you want to be an actor, this is what you got to do”. So, I started going to classes and I soon found my passion. Because whenever I´m acting I feel the most like myself. And, as I see it, for actors, is our view on the world that sets us apart. Me, personally, I think what sets me apart is where I come from and what I´ve been through. It´s like when they asked Guillermo Del Toro about his unique view on the world and he said “I´m Mexican” and I feel like we have that closeness with death, to put it in a way. We´re so conscious about it that we appreciate and love life in a different way. So, I would say, that my love for life, being human and just being able to feel all of these emotions and feelings, no matter how “good” or “bad” they can be, is what sets me apart.
I give my 100% whenever I´m in a proyect, because I just love doing what I do. I feel like that´s what Im proudest of; my passion for it and just being able to keep finding ways to continue acting.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My impression is that art needs to be shared and that gives you the opportunity to connect with different people. Fellow creatives or audience members, and we form communities. I always say that it is like in LA LA LAND when Mia says to Sebastian “People will want to go because you´re passionate about it and people love what other people are passionate about”. I feel like this exchange of passion, collaborating with other artists and connecting with audiences is the most rewarding aspect for me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I would say just show up, share, talk about it. When you let other people know about what you´ve seen that creates an audience for the artists, and that can change everything. So keep going to that friends play, share their art on social media, talk to your friends about it, that makes all the difference in the world
