We were lucky to catch up with Andres Evangelista recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andres, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
It’s an oil painting of a 1972 Camaro Z28 that I painted on a 3×4 ft stretched canvas. It was based on a reference photo that I took a few years back from my phone. It meant so much to me because it was the biggest painting challenge I given myself for scale and detail accuracy. I referenced it from a difficult photograph I chose on purpose for it’s lighting and color composition. Moreover, I was also experimenting with a different painting method I had never tried before..
Andres, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started drawing as young as five. Over time I honed my skills by replicating my drawing to the reference as accurate as possible. I started with graphite pencil/eraser and paper, then on photoshop then with color pencils. At twenty nine (even though I couldn’t paint to save my life) my college professor forced me to learn how to paint. By metaphorically pointing a loaded gun to my head. She had no filter either, for example if my paintings looks bad she’ll let me and the class know. With her enthusiasm she helped me unleashed a skill I never knew I had. I painted my first successful photorealistic painting in acrylic paint in 2015 and won first place at my college art contest. As a result my painting became a cover of an art textbook called (Preble’s Artforms Patrick Frank | second custom edition for Miami Dade College). Later I got into oil paintings and never looked back. Oil paintings became my favorite medium to paint. Now I’m currently honing my tattooing skills.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal/mission driving my creative journey is creating my piece (weather it’s drawing, painting or tattooing), as life like as possible.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To set a goal (like transferring a photograph from my smartphone to a stretch canvas by painting), and achieving it.
