We recently connected with Andrea Yordanova and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
For me, meaningful projects are ones that challenge me as an actress and allow me to delve deep into the human experience. Of course, I love all projects I’ve done as all of them have thought me something. Meaningful projects for me also involve collaboration with talented and passionate individuals who absolutely love what they’re doing. I just recently shot a short film in NYC called “Silence Within Love” and I could not describe you enough how inspired I am and happy that I worked with these incredible people all of whom were so professional and committed to what they were doing. This project is for sure one of my favorites not only because of this, but because it let me tell a story I had once experienced. That’s why I love acting – it lets you tell stories, hoping you can influence the audience and make them think.
Andrea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Before knowing that I want to act, I thought I wanted to be a vet. Weird enough, I feel like everyone I was surrounded by wanted the same. At the same time it makes sense, we were around 6 years old and loved animals. One day, one of my closest friend’s mother posted a photo on Facebook of my friend being on set of some Italian movie and I remember thinking how cool that was and how I wanted to try it as well. So, I started taking acting classes back in Bulgaria at the age of 8 and never stopped since.
Acting has been part of my life for so long and there’s nothing else I really want to do. I’m sure I didn’t choose acting, it chose me and I couldn’t be happier even though it’s hard and inconsistent and filled with refusals. If there’s a will there’s a way.
What I’m most proud of is my consistency because even for one second did I not think I want to do something else. And believe me, there has been so many no’s. Longest, I’ve gone without booking anything must’ve been about 2 years. What helped me through these times, for sure, were the weekly acting classes I was taking as well as the theatrical productions I did.
Doing theatre really helped me be more comfortable being seen. At first, and I mean few years, I was terrified every single time I went on stage. I would shake of anxiety every time. One of my acting teachers would tell me to use whatever I was feeling at that moment and bring it into the character I was playing. This one advice stuck with me forever.
Theatre has helped me be more in tune with my body and free in my movement. I was doing “Romeo and Juliet”, me playing Juliet, and I remember we had so many dances we had to learn and character embodiment. Whether it’s through dance sequences or simply embodying different emotions states, each role presents an opportunity to explore new ways of moving and expressing myself.
Recently, I’ve started taking more modeling jobs as well. I just walked my very first runway during NYFW. That’s something very far from me but it seems to be working out pretty well. I’ve shot few different music videos for artists such as Mary J Blige, which for me was absolutely mind blowing. Coming from a small county like Bulgaria, I’d never expected to work with all these big names which I grew up with.
One of my favorite campaigns that I did was for Tim Horton’s. It was so much fun and set was full with all these donuts and milkshakes which made it even better.
Something fun I’ve done as a model, was when I was doing this shoot for Pepsi and we had to take this one „perfect” shot of me drinking a bottle of Pepsi but at the same time I had to express my satisfaction. It took us over 4hrs and 10 bottles to get it. After that, I felt like I was going to explode after everything I had consumed.
I love what I do and I’m thankful to have the opportunities.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Absolutely! One book that I always have in mind and recommend to people is The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Not only has this book impacted the way I view the world and how I think, but it also has helped so much with my acting. The whole concept of acting is you being present in the very moment. Therefore, reacting as authentically as possible as if it’s really happening right now. It all leads to you being present – the whole premise of the book. It encourages actors to cultivate a heightened sense of awareness and presence, learning to quiet the mind and focus attention on the sensations and emotions of the present moment.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Most rewarding aspect for me as an actress is the ability to influence people and evoke genuine emotions within them. The power to captivate audiences, provoke thought and stir the depths of human emotion. I want the characters that I play to inspire, motivate, and transform in one way or another the viewer. Another thing that I really love about acting is the opportunity to embody and bring to life a wide array of characters, each with their own unique stories, emotions and experiences. It all gives you the chance to walk in someone else’s shoes and be them and go through what they’re going. Believe it or not, this always helps you in real life as well.
