We were lucky to catch up with Andrea ‘The Chocolate Butterfly’ Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea ‘The Chocolate Butterfly’, appreciate you joining us today. What was one of the most important lessons you learned in school? Why did that lesson stick with you?
This story was a crucial lesson learned during my journey as a mother, particularly in the context of raising a neurodivergent learner. Jade is both autistic and epileptic.
The story began back on a sunny day in May that marked a pivotal moment in my life as a parent. I was navigating the challenges of parenthood, and my daughter Jade being diagnosed with autism and epilepsy, added unique complexities to this journey. As I sat at my desk at work, I received a call from Jade’s music teacher, a call that would become the canvas for an essential lesson that redirected our lives. However, the teacher, constrained by time and conventional norms, delivered the news that Jade could no longer participate in this class. It wasn’t about the fact that we were black or broke, it was simply about the limitations of the educational system.
Her teacher expressed that he did not have the time or resources to properly support and teach Jade the clarinet. At this time Jade was having grandma seizures that often resulted in her forgetting how to do basic things like tying her shoesher, school bus number, or lessons learned in music class.
Her teacher offered to take the clarinet from Jade at the end of class without understanding how this disruption could possibly trigger her autism and invoke a seizure. This moment became a crossroads for me as a mother, I became my daughter’s champion and asked him to allow me to return the clarinet and tell her this devasting news myself. On the way home, I agonized over her reaction to what I saw as devastating news. Being the mama bear always trying to protect my children from harm, I felt guilty for allowing her to take the music class. The news could have been a bitter pill to swallow, a moment of resignation from believing, pursuing, or achieving her dreams. However, Jade surprised me with her resilience in facing an obviously unfair decision that could not be changed, instead making a simple request for a clarinet and a book on her birthday in July. I was left confused, re-explaining to her that she no longer had a teacher and I only knew how to play stringed instruments. Her response was, “Mom, you taught me I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me,” Jade embodied a profound faith that would reshape my perspective of how to be her champion, face adversity, and use your uniqueness to your advantage.
The lesson unfolded in the subsequent chapters of our lives. As Jade embraced the clarinet, an instrument representing the symphony of her uniqueness, her focus, confidence, and willingness radiated. Music wasn’t just an extracurricular activity; it was a key to unlocking her true potential. In contrast, nudging her towards other activities that were not her gift brought uncertainty, distraction, and a tendency for her to give up.
The story isn’t merely about my daughter’s musical journey; it’s a parable about embracing diversity and uniqueness. It’s a lesson that reverberates in the corridors of traditional education, where rigid structures often fail to accommodate the diverse learning styles and strengths of neurodivergent children. The rule is often that as a student you need to learn the style of your teacher to succeed, instead of the possibility that the teacher should teach how the child learns to ensure the teachers succeed.
In this narrative, the backdrop of my journey as a mother of an autistic, epileptic child paints a poignant picture. It unveils the challenges faced, the societal expectations challenged, and the transformative power of embracing individuality. This lesson, etched in the melody of Jade’s clarinet, has become a guiding principle in my work with BeUButterfly Children’s Books and Programs.
The symphony of uniqueness, discovered in that music class rejection, became a rallying cry. It fueled my mission to create stories that resonate with children facing similar challenges, stories that celebrate diversity and empower every child to unlock their boundless potential.
In conclusion, the most important lesson wasn’t confined within the walls of a traditional classroom. It unfolded in the cadence of a clarinet, symbolizing the beauty of embracing individuality and the power of resilience in the face of societal norms. This lesson, learned in the school of life, continues to shape my journey as a mother, an advocate, and the visionary force behind BeUButterfly. Jade with some help and patience taught herself to play the clarinet in two months. Upon starting the fall semester, she showed up more focused in school and life. Music unlocked her ability to connect the dots to learning and living to her full potential. This lesson is the first key for children to grasp in the BeUnique Program to identify your child’s unique abilities and talents to unlock your child’s potential to excel. Find that thing that comes naturally, Jade’s ability to be hyper-focused on one thing allowed her brain the ability to click in time, create a melody, and instill harmony in her life.
We have two more steps in our program that I share with teachers and parents to create a supportive circle net to ensure children are not left behind or out in traditional educational environments.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn a lesson that initially triggered me but ultimately became a cornerstone of my identity and mission. The nickname “The Chocolate Butterfly” was bestowed upon me by a close friend, a light-skinned African-American woman. Initially, I hesitated and felt a slight offense, questioning the appropriateness of such a label. This internal conflict was ironic, considering I advocate for authenticity through my teachings of BeUButterfly.
Upon reflection, I realized that this title wasn’t just a moniker; it was a celebration of my pride as an African-American woman and artist. Much like the butterfly symbolizes transformation, I embraced the spectrum of talents that empower me to soar—fulfilling dreams of becoming a speaker, and author, and inspiring others to embrace their BeU Brilliance.
This revelation coincided with the Black Lives Matter movement, prompting a pivotal decision in shaping my personal and professional identity. I wholeheartedly embraced the name “The Chocolate Butterfly,” recognizing that it conveyed not just a label but a powerful representation of strength, Black identity, and the transformative journey shared by many.
The journey wasn’t without challenges, as business coaches, strangers, and even family members expressed concerns about potential misunderstandings or lack of value. Skepticism loomed over its marketability and impact on my professional image.
Despite doubts and external voices, I stood firm, believing that celebrating my identity was not just valuable but essential. “The Chocolate Butterfly” transcended beyond a mere name; it became a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and acknowledgment of the diverse richness within the Black community.
Navigating this pivotal moment, I recognized the immense value of authenticity and self-expression. The name became a profound affirmation of my identity during a critical juncture in history, symbolizing vibrant wings that allowed me to soar above societal expectations and limitations. This unlearning journey fostered resilience, shaping my approach to both personal and professional endeavors, and becoming The Chocolate Butterfly became an integral part of the motto I live by: Dream It, Believe It, Pursue It, Achieve It! 🦋✨
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely, my creative journey is fueled by a profound mission. I am dedicated to addressing and reducing the alarming rates of youth depression and suicide, as well as increasing the percentage of children reading at or above grade level. Currently, the statistics are deeply concerning, with 76% of children experiencing some form of depression and 26% attempting suicide. Furthermore, less than 40% of children are reading at grade level, according to educational system reports.
Traditional education often neglects the mental health of children, resulting in a significant gap where only 1 in 3 seek or receive the necessary treatment. Media pressures and a school system reinforcing negative self-perceptions contribute to a challenging environment. The CDC reports a staggering 76% youth depression rate, a 26% suicide rate, and less than 40% of children reading at grade level.
In response to this urgent need, I introduce The Caterpillar Village. In this transformative realm, flagship characters Lillie and Blu Caterpillar, guided by their mentors and teachers, embark on a holistic educational journey. This program, supported by our BeUnique 6-Session Program and Workbook, provides a secure space for creative expression and equips children with resilience, literacy skills, and self-worth. The goal is to ensure every child finds their path to personal and academic success, leaving no child behind.
The Chocolate Butterfly is here to provide practical tools that spark conversations capable of launching a thousand dreams. Together, we can make a difference and empower our youth for a brighter future. 🦋💖
