We were lucky to catch up with Andrea Sager recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Andrea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I love owning my own business because it gives me the flexibility and opportunity to show up each day as my full self. We are all multifaceted people. It’s so rewarding to be in a position where I am able to be dynamic and fully engaged each and everyday. In my experience, that isn’t something I’ve ever been able to get at a regular job.
I’ve never really been interested in working for someone else. I tried it shortly after law school, and it was that position that pushed me to realize I’m my happiest when I am my own boss. The responsibility of running a company pushes me to be my best everyday, and it’s a responsibility I take very seriously.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Andrea Sager. I’m the founder of The Legalpreneur, an online community of small business owners who are looking to protect and grow their business by first creating a strong legal foundation.
In many ways, my company was born out of failure. Nine months after graduating from law school, I was fired from my first legal job. For most people, this would have been catastrophic. Who gets fired that soon after crossing the stage? But truthfully, it was one of the best things that happened to me. And I knew it at the time. I sat in that office for nine months, dreaming about all the ways I could be using my legal education. It wasn’t the work I had issue with. I loved what I did. But I wasn’t working with the type of clients I was passionate about. I went to law school to help people build their dreams. I loved the passion and excitement people poured into their small businesses, and I knew that feeling first hand.
I’ve always been as serial entrepreneur. I started and scaled my first business while I was in law school. In hindsight, it was pretty clear I was meant to be the lawyer for creatives. But there’s certain measures of success that we are taught to aspire too. To be a “good” lawyer, you go to a good school, pass the bar, build a practice at a big firm, and then become partner. There was only one problem – I never wanted any of those things for myself. Yes, I passed the bar and got the “dream” job. But I I quickly realized that job was someone else’s dream.
It took getting fired for me to realize how easy it would be to lose myself living a life doing things I “should” do, instead of one where I actively chose to do the things that made me happy. That’s why I launched Legalpreneur. Because my heart has always been in business, and helping business owners I care about live their dreams out loud, and make money along the way.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Getting fired taught me that every event that happens in our lives is neutral. We choose what feelings we attach to them. I could have wallowed in self-pity, panicked, or applied to other “safe” jobs after getting fired. Instead, I chose to see getting fired as a sign that I wasn’t living in alignment with my purpose. Rejection is redirection. You just need to be able to see it.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
It’s all about relationships and your mindset. I’ve never been someone whose aspired to work with everyone. I think for all business owners, there are clients that are for you and those that are not for you. By being intentional and building meaningful relationships, you’ll naturally be able to attract the kind of clients that are for your business in a major way and that should always be the goal.
Your brand is an extension of you, and you are not for everyone. None of us are, and that’s okay.
