We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize a pivotal moment that some might label as a failure, but I see it as a profound turning point. I left a company I admired to pursue a Master’s degree in Typography Design in Reading, UK – a dream come true. However, life’s unforeseen challenges led me to Paris without a clear plan. Despite the difficulties, I embarked on a Master’s degree in Art Direction, which was challenging. Although I often felt out of place as the most “exotic” member of my class, I persevered through the intense program and the disheartening behaviour of some professors.
This experience proved to be a silver lining in my life. I made incredible connections with outstanding individuals and discovered that agency work – the path that seemed predestined for ‘good designers’ – was for someone else. It took three more stints in different agencies to embrace this truthfully, but once I did, everything clicked into place, and I discovered my true artistic calling.
This journey has taught me that life’s unexpected detours aren’t merely obstacles but opportunities to discover our true passions and strengths. Had I stuck to my original plan and gone to Reading, I might have missed this invaluable self-discovery. So when life throws curve balls, I now know the importance of facing them and swinging with all my might. In these moments, we find our actual direction and purpose, and I can handle whatever challenges come my way.
Andrea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a creative designer and artist based in Toronto, I’m known for my captivating murals and exquisite lettering art. My art is a vibrant tapestry woven from the rich biodiversity of Latin America and the multicultural tapestry of Canada. This unique blend of influences allows me to create visually stunning and significant art.
My artistic journey is a fusion of my Colombian heritage and Canadian experiences. I specialize in creating murals and lettering art that bring spaces to life, blending the natural beauty of flora and fauna with the urban landscape. My work with organizations such as Street Art Toronto, Bell Box Murals Project, Mural Routes, the City of Toronto, King Street Media, TFO, and various Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) within Toronto, alongside numerous private clients, has allowed me to make a lasting impact on the community.
My versatility and commitment to bringing joy and wonder to diverse audiences set me apart. I work with many clients, including non-profits, community-focused companies, and art-centric organizations. My services extend beyond mural art to include graphic design for various applications. I aim to infuse each project with a unique essence, whether chalk, glass, or murals for interior and exterior spaces, custom private works, or public art installations.
In lettering, I offer art licensing and personalized projects, crafting custom cards and logos that resonate with individual stories and brand identities. Additionally, I host tropical art parties for corporations, offering a unique and engaging experience that combines art and team-building.
I’m also proud to offer a range of art pieces, including original artworks and prints, each imbued with the essence of my artistic journey. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that my work is more than just visually appealing—it’s a celebration of culture, a connection to nature, and an invitation to explore the deeper narratives woven into each piece. My art is not just seen; it’s experienced, leaving a lasting impression on everyone.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’m an artist and creative who finds fulfillment in my work’s profound connection and impact on individuals and communities. My diverse projects, including murals, lettering, and graphic design for non-profits, offer unique opportunities to touch lives and foster positive change.
As someone with a multicultural background, my art reflects a narrative that resonates across various communities, connecting and celebrating diverse cultures. The most rewarding part of being an artist is seeing my creations become integral to people’s stories, community development, and efforts to uplift and support those in need.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My journey to becoming the artist I am today is a story of resilience, marked by challenges, growth, and the unwavering pursuit of my passion. When I arrived in Canada at 17 with my family, I faced the daunting task of learning English and adapting to a new culture. Despite the obstacles and prejudices that came with my language barrier, I persevered and graduated from ESL after a year of intense effort. I then joined mainstream classes and excelled in my studies.
Throughout my journey, I pursued a degree in design while juggling two jobs, which was no easy feat. Despite the workload, I refused to let the lack of diversity in my field discourage me. There were few Latina graphic designers I could look up to, but this only fueled my determination to succeed and pave the way for others like me.
Despite the odds, I graduated with flying colours and began a fulfilling career. I further validated my skills by completing a demanding Master’s program, which honed my expertise and resilience. My time working in Paris post-graduation was another period of adaptation and growth.
Returning to Toronto, I consciously focused on design roles that served people, working with entities like the City of Toronto and Lincoln. Volunteering to support emerging Latina designers became a personal mission, driven by my belief in the importance of representation and diversity in leadership roles within the design industry.
In 2019, as the Amazon rainforest – a symbol of my Latin roots – was ablaze, I, too, transformed. I completed my first mural, discovering a vibrant new creative avenue. Mural and lettering art brought a new dimension to my work, allowing me to infuse Toronto’s landscape with the rich colours and energy of Latin culture. After two years of balancing this passion with my day job, I leaped to become a full-time freelancer, embracing the freedom and fulfillment it brings.
My path has been anything but straightforward. However, each obstacle I faced and overcame has been a stepping stone towards finding my authentic artistic voice and purpose. Today, as a freelancer, I create art that brightens the city and represents and advocates for diversity and cultural richness in the creative industry.
