We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Reina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since I was little, I have always liked to draw, but I never thought of any career related to art, I wanted to be a surgeon. My parents who saw other qualities in me and seeing that I spent my time drawing one day took me to see a local artist to ask for his opinion. We went, I showed him my drawings and he told me that I had talent. I was not convinced, for me I was not good enough. Then marriage came, children and different jobs, nothing related to art or creativity. I started painting two years ago or so and due to a dream, but my search started much earlier. Trying to find a change in my life and in the life of the person that I love. I wanted to help him, but I read somewhere that to change your environment, one must seek change within oneself. So, I started meditating, doing yoga, thanking and praying. I am not religious, but I do believe in faith and hope. That’s how it all started, I think the dream was the answer to my questions and the beginning of my artistic career.

Andrea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name Andrea Reina I am a self-taught artist. I was born in Salto, Uruguay in 1976.
I started painting about two years ago, two and a half years ago. My works are pyrography, acrylic painting and mix media.
Most of my paintings are abstract figurative and surreal.
I am inspired by the personal search, women, nature, and the connection between the human being and his environment.
What I look for through my paintings or drawings is that connection. Between the artist and the person looking at the painting, between the person and the painting. I want to be able to transmit and awaken emotions, feelings of peace, tranquility, union.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe that art in all its forms is educational, it heals and feeds the soul. Consuming more art, teaching the new generation its importance for the system and for themselves. The importance of supporting each other and the true value of things, especially when today everything is disposable, where boredom is solved by buying or exchanging this for that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The connection with a client and seeing the connection between the client and the painting.
