We were lucky to catch up with Andrea Osuna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
Early in my career, I had the exciting opportunity to embark on a journey as a food photographer for a prominent restaurant chain in Guatemala. My enthusiasm soared as I ventured into this new endeavor, and after successfully completing two photoshoots with them, I felt confident about the challenges that awaited me. Little did I anticipate the level of difficulty some of the dishes on the menu would pose.
One particular dish that stood out as a formidable challenge was a breakfast platter featuring two perfectly fried eggs. The client’s request was simple yet demanding: they wanted the yolks to appear flawless, devoid of any imperfections or bubbles. I was not only responsible for photography but also involved in food styling, which added to the complexity. This was my first time capturing images of fried eggs, and the pressure began to mount.
As time passed and our efforts failed to meet the client’s expectations, frustration took hold. I dedicated over two hours to perfecting those eggs, to no avail. It was at this juncture that the client approached me privately, offering valuable feedback. With kindness, he acknowledged that I needed more experience, especially given the project’s urgency and significance. Regrettably, they could no longer wait for me to learn on the job. However, he also expressed belief in second chances and encouraged me to reach out when I felt prepared for another opportunity.
Leaving the restaurant that day, I couldn’t help but feel like a failure. Doubts crept in, and I questioned if the voice that had long whispered my inadequacy in photography was right. It took time to process these emotions, but eventually, I realized I had two options. The first was to give up and part with my equipment, accepting that I lacked the skills to be a professional photographer. The second option was to persevere, continuously learn, and hone my craft.
I chose the latter path, and after eight years of relentless dedication to photography, I can say that moment defined my career positively. I also learned the importance of collaborating with colleagues who excel in areas where I may be less experienced. This not only allows for mutual learning but also ensures the delivery of exceptional work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a passionate photographer who specializes in both food photography and portraits. Over the years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with numerous brands, restaurants, and hotels, where I have not only captured delectable food moments but also played a pivotal role in enhancing the food styling process.
My journey into the world of food photography began during my time as a graphic designer for a recipe magazine. It was there that my love for food deepened, as I immersed myself in the diverse world of cuisine and gained a solid foundation in cooking fundamentals. Following a year of photography classes, I found that food photography came naturally to me.
Since relocating to Portland, Oregon, I have expanded my portfolio to include portrait photography. I take pride in crafting lasting memories for families during their special moments, such as cake smash and birthday parties. Working with families, especially those with toddlers, can be challenging, but I find these photoshoots to be incredibly enjoyable.
When collaborating with a client, I prioritize understanding their unique needs and preferences. My goal is to create portraits and product photographs that not only capture the subject’s essence but also reflect their personality and style. I believe that photography is a powerful medium for storytelling, and I am dedicated to helping you tell your story through the lens.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In your pursuit of success, it’s crucial to gain a deep understanding of your target audience and where to connect with them effectively. The market is vast and diverse, providing opportunities for everyone, but it’s essential to identify the specific segment you aim to serve. Here’s a roadmap that I followed to achieve this:
Client Profiling: Begin by profiling your ideal clients. What are their characteristics, preferences, and needs? Dive into what they like, their habits, and where they typically spend their time.
Market Segment Selection: In a broad market, select the segment you want to cater to. Focus on a niche that aligns with your skills and interests. This specialization can set you apart and attract the right clients.
Research and Engagement: Invest time in thorough research. Learn as much as you can about your chosen market segment. Engage with potential clients to understand their pain points and desires.
Building Alliances: Networking is key, especially if your chosen market isn’t within your existing social circle. Establishing strategic alliances can open doors. Seek out partners and collaborators who can complement your services and help you reach your target audience.
Trust Building: Trust is the foundation of fruitful partnerships and client relationships. Consistently deliver exceptional work and demonstrate your expertise. Be reliable and transparent to earn the trust of your clients and partners.
Case in Point: I’ve personally found great success by partnering with indoor playgrounds in the Portland area, specifically Leka Playland. They have become valuable allies who not only recommend my services to their clients but also provide opportunities for joint activities. These partnerships have been instrumental in increasing my visibility and allowing more people to experience my work.
Remember, success in your chosen field is not just about what you know but also about who you know and how you apply that knowledge. By understanding your ideal clients and forging meaningful connections, you can pave the way for a thriving career.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My career and client base were thriving in Guatemala when, in 2021, my husband and I made a life-altering decision to embark on a new chapter together in Portland, Oregon. This monumental choice required a leap of faith, and I must admit, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Starting fresh in a different country felt like a daunting endeavor, reminiscent of the trials I faced upon completing my bachelor’s degree.
As I ventured into launching my business in the United States, a sense of déjà vu washed over me. It seemed as though I were retracing steps in my professional journey, rather than forging ahead. This feeling was particularly striking for someone in their mid-thirties when societal expectations often center around career advancement and stability.
However, this change also ushered in a newfound openness to unexplored possibilities that I had previously doubted myself in pursuing. For instance, I delved into portrait photography, a realm I had once considered beyond my capabilities. To my surprise, I discovered a genuine passion for capturing family moments, and my clients expressed their delight in hiring me to photograph their loved ones, particularly the littlest members of their families. This unexpected turn has been a source of joy and fulfillment in my career.
