We were lucky to catch up with Andrea Keith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
It is all about connections. I received my first client from a referral from another attorney. I sent as many letters and emails that I could letting people know that I was starting my own firm and tried to make as many connections as possible.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a criminal defense attorney, victim advocate and appellate attorney. I was raised by an attorney but wanted to work with the public interest population first. I decided that I wanted to be a litigator rather than a transactional attorney early on as I enjoyed being in court rather than sitting behind a desk. I also loved the courtroom. I eventually fell into trial work and loved representing individuals that could not afford representation. After that, I had children so I left the courtroom for appellate law and eventually opened my own firm.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I had children as I had to leave the hours and hours that I was working and stay at home with the kids practicing appellate law.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I did not have to. I started cheap with little expenses and then once things built up, I was able to add bigger expenses.
