Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrea Hipps. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Andrea, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
The divorce industry is saturated with well-wishers who suggest that parents should get along after divorce for the sake of their kids. It’s not bad advice, it just ignores the reality that shifting from divorce directly into a best friends model is impossible. What I promote and teach is that the major work of divorce involves only one goal – learning to manage yourself around people who can’t or won’t and learning how to interact with situations that don’t go your way. When you figure out how to do this – by yourself, not with your former partner – you set the stage for a new type of relationship with them that doesn’t require their cooperation to make it go well.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m a Divorce Coach, author, wife, and mother who has personally lived the frustrating and enormously challenging struggle of surviving divorce while still working, raising kids, and participating in community life. Today, I help people navigate every stage of divorce from early emotional struggles to long-term visioning and rebuilding. The interesting part? I do it without your former partner’s cooperation or participation.
My divorce coaching is future focused and designed to help you let go of overwhelm and embrace what is next. Through my coaching practice, I help people answer questions like:
What do I need to know as I contemplate getting divorced?
How will I know if I should stay married or get divorced?
How do I best support my kids as they adjust?
What do I do with all of this pain, sadness, and anger?
How do I move into the differently-shaped space that is my life now?
How do I communicate with my former spouse when I’m triggered?
How can I avoid painful and costly mistakes as the divorce process unfolds?
How do I manage the wild emotions that divorce stirs up in me?
Will I ever be ok again?
I’m most proud of introducing and developing my “two-address family” concept, which moves away from charged words like broken home and divorced. The two-address family model relies on a strengths-based parenting approach and seeks to help people develop a solid flexible self, quiet mind and calm heart, grounded responding, and meaningful endurance — all of which are necessary to living well after divorce..
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My practice goes beyond the traditional “one hour of coaching per week” model and incorporates an all-access component. Rarely do those going through divorce encounter all of their struggles solely during the weekly coaching session. The real learning happens not just on Tuesday morning during a session, but also on Friday night when a client gets yet another aggravating text from their former partner. By making myself available to workshop those trigger moments in real time quickly and outside of our sessions, I see client growth times compressed and real transformation taking place.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
By far, the best two sources of new clients are word of mouth from satisfied clients and referrals from satisfied law firms. Divorce coaching is new to many and gaining in popularity. As people learn more about the guidance, skills building, and emotional management framework that happens in the divorce coaching context, demand keeps increasing. People are really seeking out meaningful support during such a disruptive time in their family life.
