We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrea Gomez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrea below.
Andrea , appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
For my whole life, I’ve considered myself creative. My earliest memories of drawing go back to when I was probably 5-6 years old, I was in my great-grandma’s house in the coffee region of Colombia. We were sitting in the balmy afternoon heat, the adults were talking and I was in my own world with markers and paper.
I studied Graphic & Product Design because I wanted to pursue a creative career.
But little did I know that it would be leading me down a path that felt the opposite.
After my 4 year-study, I wanted nothing to do with what I had been taught.
I felt heartbroken, and exhausted and I remember having no drop left of creative magic within me.
It had all gone into making deadlines, pumping ideas on-demand, and doing my best to please everyone else.
It took me YEARS to start asking myself some hard questions around Creation.
It turns out, that Creation is NOT the same as production.
We live in a production model and call it “creative”.
This, for the sensitive humans that can feel the pulse of Creation, is a very disorienting process.
It’s uncharted territory in its very nature.
Creation IS original like that.
One of the most challenging parts of this whole process has been having no elders to hold space for the intensity that it is to truly listen to what wants to be created through us and devote our time, energy, and resources to bring that to life.
I feel artists are often some of the loneliest people because we lack places where we can be witnessed and nourished in a world that needs everything by yesterday.
So my creative journey has 2 main streams:
The stream of my own expression, of the ideas that want to be made by me, and the personal process I go through with them.
And the stream of mentoring those who are treading the same path towards remembering themselves as part of Creation and their expression as a powerful trait of being human.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Andrea Gomez, I’m a WITCH & a mentor on the path of Creation.
I believe we are all Creative.
We are all part of Creation.
We are Creation itself, having an experience in a human body.
What distinguishes us from every other species on the planet is our particular capacity to translate frequency, emotion, and vibration into something we can touch, see, smell, hear, taste, and share that experience with others.
For far too long we’ve been conditioned to believe a lot of distortions about what being creative means.
Whether you are full-time creating and on the edge of burn-out or you haven’t dared to make something in years, these stories run deep within our psyches.
My work is centered around offering 1-on-1 and group spaces to be able to witness, question, and reorient our relationship with Creation and its many expressions.
I support people in the intense process that it is to be human and to give ourselves to the process of creating by offering spaces where their pain, struggles, doubts, and fears are held and transformed into fuel for their own transformation.
As a mentor, I don’t claim to have the answers, but I ask really good questions and I listen deeply.
Creating is a deeply mysterious experience and I’m here more as a midwife than as an expert.
I was initiated into this way of relating to my own creativity by a tarot deck I created during the pandemic.
For the first time in my whole life, I decided to go deeper, to release all the attachments I had to how it should turn out, and I diligently, for 2 years, created all the pieces that were necessary to birth this creation into the world. In May of 2022, I got the deck funded on Kickstarter and it was a REAL moment of AWE to see the thing that walked me through one of the most intense times in our collective experience bless the world with its Magic.
I believe Art is our Medicine.
It’s what we need the most in times like this.
I believe all art is needed.
The one that gets published and the one that is done in a journal.
It’s helping us navigate our human experience, individually and collectively.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think a BIG SHIFT we are being asked to embrace right now is to understand that Creativity operates much more like Nature, than like a machine. Artists are SENSITIVE. We need that sensitivity to be able to translate the world of ideas into the world of matter. Yet, so much of our current system is set up against nourishing and refining that sensitivity.
Returning to Nature as a model of Creation is a powerful way to support artists.
Remembering we operate in cycles and not in straight lines is a HUGE paradigm shift.
Shifts in society begin with shifts in the individual, then in the communal, then in the systemic so I believe that creating networks of emotional and spiritual support within those who are closest to us is so needed for us right now.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding (and sometimes challenging) part of being a Creatrix is to witness the magic of the process. How incredible it is that I can receive these ideas, that I can become their steward, that I get to say yes to something utterly mysterious. How incredible it is to see myself being expanded to learn, to practice, and to share in ways I never thought I would.
How incredible it is to devote some of my time to something that has no promise of reward other than the absolute JOY I feel when I’m creating it. How incredible to see it being materialized one stroke, one word, one thread, one color at the time.
How utterly magical is that as a human being, I get to do something no other creature on this planet is able to do?
I oftentimes need a reminder that what I’m doing when I’m creating is a powerful connection with that which creates everything in existence.
The thing I love the most about creating is that it’s constantly teaching me how to be human.
