We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrea Godin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrea below.
Hi Andrea, thanks for joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
Some of the first money I earned as a creative was when I locked in my first music licensing/sync deal on national Canadian Television. The show was called “Out There With Melissa DiMarco” which aired on City TV and OMNI and I secured this deal a couple years after I began writing. I believe I was around 17 years old. I was still brand new to learning the basics of the music business and I was really excited that myself and my producer at the time made this happen. Much to my surprise, the show aired over and over again for years which resulted in years of royalties.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Music Producer, Recording Artist, and Songwriter with a main focus on Dance genres such as House and Techno, as well as R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, and Trap music. I am also the label owner of Scarlet Cartels and Red Cartel. I began performing and singing on stage when I was 11 and started writing when I was 16. Shortly after I began writing was when I experienced my first original song being aired on FM radio which is what inspired me to really pursue music.
Over the years I’ve performed at hundreds of venues and events across Canada and have had my music aired on FM and satellite radio worldwide which resulted in my songs charting in the Top 100 iTunes Dance charts many times. All of the radio play sparked an idea in my mind: I need to create a dance music radio show. So, my radio show ‘Fresh & Wild’ was born. It is a monthly 1 hour dance music radio show in which I not only include my absolute favourite electronic music but also 1 or 2 of my own tracks in each episode. The show is now syndicated on 100 stations worldwide.
Right now I’m really focused on building and growing my brand and labels. My team is absolutely amazing and our goal is to remain as self-sufficient as possible by empowering ourselves to be able to do as much work in-house as possible. Things like marketing, promotion, photo shoots, video content are all things we are able to do the majority of, although we do have to out source a small portion of the work. The branding of both labels is very dark with a futuristic techno feel. I’ve never really been drawn to the bright, pop style vibe.
Currently we have so many music projects on the go which means late this year/early next year there will be a lot of exciting new releases on the way. We’re taking the music to a whole new level and we really push ourselves to make each record better than the last. My team consists of Gold & Platinum selling producers Starkillers and Howie Hersh so I am always learning so much about production from them. I work really hard to become a better producer every day.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As I’m sure many people know, the music industry has a reputation for being like the “Wild West”. That is very true and I’ve definitely experienced that. From about 2013 – 2018 was what tested me to see if I really was resilient enough to continue in the music business. I was working with a management team that unfortunately took over my life in a bad way. On the outside and online it seemed as though things were going great. I was doing tons of high profile shows, big events, media interviews, etc., but behind the scenes I was being controlled and manipulated to an extreme extent. I was ready to quit.
Thankfully with the most perfect timing, my current team reached out to me and completely restored my drive and motivation with their positivity and by creating the absolute best creative and happy environment for me to be the artist I needed to be. This is the reason I’ve been able to build and grow so quickly over the past few years.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Right now we are very focused on growing the strongest catalogue of music we can and really putting the money behind each release so that it get heard by as many listeners as possible. The end goal is to get back to what we love the most which is touring and the smartest way to do that successfully is to build up your brand and music. It’s a lot of work day in and day out but for us being on stage is worth the effort we put in.
