Andrea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I found myself in a high-risk twin pregnancy back 2014, I became determined to eliminate additional health risks by switching to safe beauty, baby, and household products. Upon learning that personal care products are largely unregulated, I started educating myself on ingredients and avoiding those associated with adverse health effects. In 2019, I started the Switch Natural blog to share what I was learning with others. I also built a strong and supportive Instagram community where I receive messages around the clock from people wanting to know if their products have potentially harmful ingredients and what they should use instead. I knew there had to be a better way to get people the answers they were looking for so that it would be easy for them to switch to natural products. This year I launched the Switch Natural mobile app to do just that. App users can scan products online or in store – no barcode necessary – to find out what potentially harmful ingredients they contain (if any), including ingredient descriptions and relevant research related to its toxicity. Users can also shop my favorite non-toxic products on the app.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
It brings me joy to help others on their non-toxic lifestyle journey. I am proud to offer unbiased information and honest feedback on products which is what I was looking for when I started. My app serves customers only (not brands) with a focus on buying products that are safe for families.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by interacting with the community. I learn from and show appreciation for the accounts I follow by liking, commenting, and asking questions. This builds trust and fosters that human connection which is really what social media is about. By prioritizing being useful for my current audience, I have built a close knit community who happily shares my account with their friends and family members.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
In addition to mobile app sales, I have an affiliate marketing revenue stream. Affiliate partnerships allow me to earn commission on sales of my favorite products that I share on my app, blog, and social media account.
