We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrea Cothern. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrea below.
Andrea, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Managing my life and my career takes a lot of balance. It sounds shopworn but the adage “work hard, play hard” comes to mind. It’s true, the more I work the more time I need to decompress. As far as vacations yes, I travel a lot and I have a network of friends that join me on amazing adventures but also, I love to decompress and vacation at home with my dog and a simple meal.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been passionate about photography my entire life. From college I was able to study abroad, and it was in London where I was opened to the world of high fashion photography. I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a BA in Photography and minors in both marketing and graphic design. I designed my website (Andreacothern.com) and have been a freelance photographer since then and am thankful to be busy enough to be working full time. I have an innate ability to put my clients at ease and bring out the best in my subjects. I began practicing yoga eight years ago, but over the covid-19 shut down I became extremely interested in photographing subjects practicing yoga. I still very much enjoy practicing and teaching yoga, but now I have a fun and lucrative addition to my client list.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
It seems more and more of my business comes from social media. Its been a huge learning curve for me but well worth the time I’ve invested learning how to navigate it all.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would say the utilization of social media platforms for marketing is a must in the current freelance economy. Not to overshadow the importance of other resources like photo editing software and lighting equipment, but literally everyone has a camera now so the only thing separating artists from professional artists is their ability to market themselves. I feel that the advent of social media has revolutionized that process, and I totally wish I had known about the benefits of that resource long ago.
