Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrea Brewington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Andrea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
Vacations are my ultimate passion and an essential part of my well-being. They provide a much-needed escape from the daily grind and give me the chance to recharge my batteries and reconnect with my loved ones. For me, it’s not just about the destination, but the experience, the adventure, and the memories that come with it.
I am a beach lover at heart, and nothing quite compares to the soothing sound of the ocean, the warmth of the sun on my skin, and the feeling of sand between my toes. The sight of a stunning sunset on the horizon has the power to clear my mind and bring me back to the present moment. It’s a humbling reminder of the beauty of nature and the wonder of God’s creation.
When I’m not lounging on a sandy beach, I am fulfilling my bucket list of dreams of visiting world wonders, historical sites, and places I’ve always wanted to see. I’ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to take a gondola ride in Venice, cruise the Mediterranean, and explore the ruins of the Roman Empire.
In short, I believe that taking care of oneself includes taking vacations, and I make it a priority to make them a part of my life. It’s not just about escaping the daily routine but rather finding new perspectives, experiences, and memories.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a producer, my heart is heavy with the injustices and challenges faced by women in the corporate world. Growing up in Jamaica as a Jamaican Indian woman, I have personally felt the sting of cultural and societal barriers that limit opportunities for marginalized communities.
For over 20 years, I have watched as my female colleagues have been held back, their voices silenced and their potential unrealized. But I refuse to stand idly by any longer. I am taking a stand and using my passion for film to give voice to the experiences of women like me. I have poured my heart and soul into creating a powerful film that not only tells my story but also the stories of countless women who have faced discrimination and injustice in the corporate world.
Together with a talented team, I founded Aroha Studios, a production company that is dedicated to creating impactful and thought-provoking content that addresses important social issues, specifically the pay gap and representation of women in corporate America. With this production company, I am determined to use my platform to tell stories that move people, inspire change and empower women to demand more from the system with a dark past and to shine a light on the actual injustices we experience.
Our flagship project, the “61 cents” limited series, tackles wage inequality for women worldwide, and is the first television series production to share honest, untold stories of systematic oppression experienced by women in a male-dominated workforce. The pay gap of 61 cents refers to the difference in average earnings between Black women and white, non-Hispanic men in the United States, regardless of education, experience, or seniority. The statistic of 61 cents is a powerful symbol of the devaluation of Black women’s work and their contribution.
I am proud of the work that Aroha Studios has done and the positive impact it has had on so many people. My goal is to create content that leaves a lasting impact on the world, and to give a voice to those who have been marginalized. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that Aroha Studios is a company that is dedicated to creating content that is not only entertaining but also meaningful and impactful.
I am asking you to join me on this journey, to see behind the scenes of our projects, to hear about upcoming events and to engage with us and like-minded individuals. Together, we can create a more just and equitable society. I am passionate about this cause, and I know that with your support, we can make a real difference. Let’s make a change, together.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a software consultant turned TV/Film Producer, the constant push and pull between the stability and security of a corporate job and the uncertainty and unpredictability of a career in the creative industry is something that many may not fully understand. The risk involved in producing a film or TV show is immense, as there is no guarantee of success. Every project is a gamble, and it can be difficult to reconcile these two worlds and find a balance between the safety of a corporate job and the passion and fulfillment of a creative career.
But the rewards of a career in the creative industry are worth the risk. Being a producer requires a level of dedication, hard work, and sacrifice that cannot be understated. It’s not just about having talent, it’s about putting in the time and effort to hone your craft, build relationships, and make connections. It’s about being willing to take risks and constantly pushing yourself to grow and improve.
The ability to bring a story to life on the screen and entertain people is a great honor and privilege, and it’s this passion and drive that drives me as a producer. My journey has taught me the importance of balancing stability and security with passion and creativity, and I am proud to be a part of an industry that allows me to do just that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a producer, the most rewarding aspect of my job is the ability to use my creativity to tell powerful and meaningful stories that have the potential to change people’s lives. Whether it’s highlighting underrepresented voices and perspectives or shedding light on important social issues, the ability to use my skills and talents to make a real impact on the world is incredibly fulfilling.
Being creative means that I can bring new ideas to life, inspire and move audiences, and be a part of creating something that will be enjoyed by people from all backgrounds and walks of life.
Additionally, being creative in the entertainment industry also means being able to collaborate with other talented and passionate individuals, from writers and directors to actors and crew members. It’s a privilege to work with such a diverse group of people and to learn from their perspectives.
Overall, the most rewarding aspect of being creative is the ability to use my talents to make a positive impact on the world, while also being able to collaborate with other amazing creatives to learn from them.
