We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Boyd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Before I started writing, I had almost zero knowledge of everything involved in getting a book into the readers’ hands. When I felt the call to write, I began reading every article I could find on crafting the story. Once the first story was complete, I moved on to researching how to get the book published, and then on to how to promote the book. It’s a never-ending process, really.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have a problem with “staying in my lane” so I write in three genres- Romantic Women’s Fiction, Sweet Romance, and Fantasy- but all have an element of romance and all of them are Christian.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When someone tells me that one of my books touched them in a profound way, that is the ultimate reward. That is the reason I write.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I’ve heard stories where authors have poured hundreds into getting that first book published and it took longer than you’d think for them to break even. Some never do. Thankfully, I didn’t have that kind of revenue to throw into a project without knowing the outcome at that time. It forced me to learn how to do most of it myself and make connections for the parts I couldn’t do. It took a lot of I-want-to-pull-my-hair-out studying on my part, but my first book costed less than twenty dollars to get ready for publication. It is possible to put out a good product at a low cost if you’re willing to work for it.
