We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Betancourt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Andrea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea to even open my business after leaving a popular wax chain. I had about 50 clients in my DM’s asking me where or when I was opening and that gave me the courage that I could really open my own space. While thinking of my mission, what I really wanted the heart of my business to be, I looked anywhere for inspiration. While reading my online reviews, a common denominator was how comfortable I’m able to make people feel. I wanted to create a space free from judgement where anyone could be comfortable to be their authentic self. After a lifetime of struggling in my own self love, I’m able to create a safe space for everyone to be themselves. I provide sometimes, vulnerable services. My most coveted gifts and just as important as my skills, lie in how I’m able to make others feel. I find that’s when I’m able to make the most genuine connections.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my career as a photographer and fell into doing makeup by accident. I needed to pay traffic tickets and gotten a part time job at Sephora and from there, took makeup and the beauty industry more seriously. After working for a multitude of brands/retailers, I continued my education at Paul Mitchell the School Austin and received my esthetician license. While at PMTS Austin, I was certified in a number of different services to include lash extensions. After the pandemic I continued to freelance in makeup while becoming a trainer with a popular wax chain. I became a speed waxing expert and obtained a small following. Upon leaving I had dozens clients in my DM’s asking where and when I was opening. That really gave me the courage to open my business. As a multi-passionate individual, I’ve always felt misaligned in a specialized world and have been able to create my own corner of the world doing all the services I love. I provide luxury services in a very non pretentious way. No matter what the service is, from helping to create memories while helping a client glam for their wedding to their first Brazilian wax, I’m able to create an environment centered around kindness and compassion while having a spot on attention to detail and delivering a beautiful result. Chasing a genuine connection while being able to do all the services I love, is how I am able spark real joy in mine and others day. What sets me apart is my commitment to creating a positive and personalized experience for each client. I believe that beauty services extend beyond the physical aspect and should also encompass kindness, compassion, and attention to detail. At Black Parade Beauty Company, I strive to provide not only excellent technical skills but also a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I focus on understanding my clients’ unique needs and preferences, tailoring my services to meet their expectations. This dedication to exceptional customer service and the cultivation of a supportive environment is what distinguishes me from other beauty providers. A place where I prioritize creating a safe and inclusive environment, offering a range of services that help individuals feel their best.”
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Setbacks and challenges are inevitable in any career, and I view them as valuable learning opportunities. When I was let go from previous positions, such as my time at MAC cosmetics, it was a difficult experience. However, I used it as a catalyst for personal and professional growth. I took the opportunity to reevaluate my goals, enhance my skills, and pursue further education. The setbacks taught me resilience, the importance of self-reflection, and the need to prioritize my own well-being. Ultimately, these experiences have shaped me into a stronger and more determined professional, ready to overcome any obstacle that comes my way. The culmination of my past experiences in both my career and life, have prepared me for anything that might be thrown my way
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Building a strong clientele and following is a result of several key factors. First and foremost, I prioritize establishing genuine connections with my clients. By actively listening to their needs and desires, I can deliver personalized experiences that exceed their expectations. Additionally, I leverage social media platforms and online marketing strategies to showcase my work, engage with potential clients, and build brand awareness. I also encourage word-of-mouth referrals by consistently delivering high-quality services and fostering a positive client experience. By consistently demonstrating my expertise and passion, I’ve been able to cultivate a loyal and supportive clientele
