We recently connected with Andrea Baigorria and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to build a journey I am proud of, while helping others reach that same sense of fulfillment. .
My family and in particular, my mother, always set the example of being selfless and compassionate, and I strive to emulate that every day. I take pride in the community of like-minded people I’ve been able to build throughout my life, and I am always eager to support those people and build bridges between them.
I give without expectation, and I’ve found that when you do that, positivity and good intent tends to come back to you in the least expected ways and moments.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the Global Head of Public Relations and Communications for Azamara Cruises. I lead strategies for the cruise line’s external communications, including government relations, crisis communications, media relations, and more. I’ve worked for more than 12 years across industries such as consumer goods, food and beverage, aviation, and technology, and throughout my career, I’ve been able to help amplify brands and develop relationships with key external stakeholders around the world. I’m especially passionate about purpose-driven work and have helped build corporate social responsibility efforts for multiple brands. I am a proud member of Women Leading Travel & Hospitality and I hold a Master of Business Administration from Florida International University.
I was born in Miami, but lived ages seven to 17 in Lima, Peru, and am proud to call both places home. I came back to Miami for college and worked all through undergrad at a grocery store to pay for my degree, which taught me valuable lessons and set the tone for my corporate career. In every job I take on, I always look for ways to create opportunities where others might not see them, and I aim to bridge gaps between people and teams to ensure optimal results and employee/stakeholder engagement. .
One of the most important things you should know about me is that I’m an avid traveler – I’ve traveled to over 45 countries so far, and I absolutely love discovering different cultures and forming meaningful connections in each destination I visit.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I left a dream job in the airline industry to join a booming tech startup in Miami that I was really excited about. I always put my all into my work, so when my role was affected by layoffs just 6 months into the job, after having successfully launched a major celebrity campaign, I was truly shocked and didn’t really know how to feel about it – it had never happened to me before. However, it turned out to be exactly what I needed to prove to myself how resilient I can be. Once the initial shock wore off, I immediately dedicated myself to the job hunt and within five weeks, I landed a position within an industry that I’ve always been passionate about, which is travel and hospitality. During that time, I was also able to finally kick off some side projects that had been postponed and I am passionate about, and most importantly, I took the time to reconnect with and believe in myself, which got me to where I am today.
Any advice for managing a team?
It’s important to put in the time to show that you truly care about developing your team, so they know that they can count on you to support and guide them along the way. I find that my team works best when I lead by example by always taking on a task and being authentic and honest, thinking outside of the box, and going the extra mile to exceed expectations. I also believe it is important to give credit where credit is due and to properly acknowledge a job well done, one-on-one and also among other colleagues and leadership. It creates an environment for people to want to thrive.
