We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andre/ Tray Crittenden/Fletcher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andre/ Tray below.
Andre/ Tray, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
The process of going from idea to execution was somewhat time consuming. The most challenging part for us was creating a name because we wanted something unique but creative to our audience. The exact same night the idea came about is the same night Tray and I got on the phone and began brainstorming names. We were on the phone for hours trying to figure out a great name for our brand. We even asked family and friends for suggestions. After hours of rejecting so many names we were able to come up with one that we knew would stick with us. “Prime Life Promotions”! we chose this name because our target crowd are college kids looking to have fun while being safe. Ultimately, we are targeting young adults that are in their prime. We felt like the word “Prime” was essential for our brand name.
Once we established the name our next step was to bring the name to life by designing a logo. We reached out to a graphic designer to help us with the vision. He was able to provide us with several options but there was only one that we loved! After we established our name and received our logo it was time to handle the legalities of our business. We were able to create an LLC, EIN, and open a business bank account.
Afterwards, we were ready to plan our first event. Our first event was Halloween of 2020. The venue we rented for our event was in a perfect location. It was a four minute drive from the University of Louisville, where we target most of our audience. We allowed ourselves 3 weeks of promotion for this event. We did a mass share on social media, visited UofL campus and surrounded student housing and distributed physical copies of our flyer. We reached out to the athletes, Greeks, and any other college kids that wanted to party. The day of the event we arrived at the venue early to set up and we noticed that people were already lining up for our event. Some people were standing outside two hours before the doors opened and at this moment we knew it was going to be a successful night. 11 o’clock came and we looked out the door and the line was 2 blocks long. Everything about this event was memorable. The crowd energy was great and everybody looked amazing. Our DJ was on point, our photographer snapped amazing photos, and our videographer was able to capture every moment. Everything about this event went exactly as planned. After this event our brand became the talk of the town but not just in our city but in other surrounding cities and universities. We gained a lot of followers and everyone was excited for our next event. Prime Life Promotions was officially launched and the nightlife in Louisville, Kentucky was bigger and better for college aged adults.
Andre/ Tray, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Prime Life Promotions, a black owned business created in March 2020. Our brand was started to provide entertainment and events for college-aged adults. Due to the increase in gun violence in our city the night life, especially for the younger adults, was deemed a liability for promoters. There were still night clubs and bars open, but no one had anything for the college aged adults, so we felt like that was perfect market to target. Within our team we have a motto, The 3 C’s, Content, Communication and Consistency. We keep an open line of communication within our team and with our supporters. We must stay consistent with providing events for our supporters, and we ensure to provide memorable content. The goal is to create a safe, fun and memorable experience at each of our events, but we take extra steps t ensure that above all things our events are safe. We take pride in having the safest party environment in the city. People want to come out and party, but they also want to make it home safely. On top of providing the safest events in the city of Louisville, we were the most consistent. We even took our events to other cities and universities throughout the state. I believe that is what got us crowned by the Kentucky Urban Entertainment Awards as the #1 College Party Promoters in the state of Kentucky.
We do this for the people, we do it for the culture and we do it because nobody else can.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Right now our business is pivoting. We are currently working on transitioning from the college crowd (18+) to strictly 21+. During this time we are planning on revamping our business such as the name, logo, and website. We want to create a more classy vibe for our older crowd and introduce them to a scenery they have not seen in Louisville, Kentucky. We decided to transition to 21+ because we want to grow with our crowd and continue giving them memorable moments. This transition is important to us because it shows that we care about our fans, supporters, and followers We hear and consider all feedback from our supporters and it is only right if they continue to follow us on this journey.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I’ve known my business partner Tray my whole life due to us being cousins. I originally was in business with his brother Fonn before i decided to separate. Once Tray knew i was separating and starting a new brand he immediately contacted me and asked if he could go into business with me. I knew from the start that we would be a good fit because we both have similar business ideas and are very organized. Currently everything is going well and going exactly as planned.
