We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andre Mattison. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andre below.
Hi Andre, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
It has been quite the journey. I started back in 2020. During the pandemic I couldn’t go out so a few buddies and I decided to make some TikTok’s. At that time my video editing skills were not that good. I decided to dedicate time each day to filming and learning what angles/ edits worked best. I could have definitely watched more videos on editing instead of just filming a ton. That would have saved me a ton of time. I do think learning how to properly light videos was the most essential thing I learned. It makes a big difference and it really helps video editors. There were a few challenging aspects, having to deal with the ever changing algorithms is very tough. You could learn one thing that good for one video will not be good for another based upon the algorithm. You also have to be willing to dedicate time into perfecting the craft and with life happening so fast that’s sometimes tough.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a comedy creator. I try to put a smile on people’s faces while making relatable content. Right as the pandemic started I made some comedy videos. I posted a video and the feedback I got was amazing. People were saying they wanted more. I always like to make people smile/laugh so this was great for me. I decided that I was going to post a video almost everyday. In doing so, I was able to work with a lot of other digital creators as well as learn a lot of the ins/outs of how to create good content. I have amassed a large following on all the major social sites.
I started working with brands to use comedy as a selling tool. Seeing something funny or relatable in a video helps customers associate something positive with the products that are being sold. Based upon my creativity, I think I can help sell almost anything.
I’m very grateful to just be able to bring a little joy in the world. It’s a great feeling to be able to help people, whether it be the people that are watching the videos and enjoying or another creator that I can teach a few things to.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
So there is a major source that I should have taken advantage of sooner. Everyone knows it but I’m not sure if people are using it or other source. I remember trying to figure out out to do a slow zoom out on a video. I couldn’t figure it out and got a bit sad. Then I remembered, you can Google search anything! If you have ever thought about how to do something , there’s a good chance it’s on YouTube or someone else has the same question. Don’t be forget about the power of the internet!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lessons I think I have learned is that you have to show up for you and you can’t expect the same out of other people as you expect of yourself. Just because you are willing to stay up late or go the extra mile doesn’t mean someone else will or that they even should. People have full lives and other things going on. You have to be willing to accept that and put the work in for yourself to get to where you want to be.
