We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andre’ Lamar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andre’, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I would have to say it’s about 50/50. Each one gives me a different type of joy. As an artist, I help to bring stories to life. As a creative, I bring my thoughts and vision to life.
I have had a regular job; however, I can’t see myself returning to that lifestyle. The thought of devoting my energy, countless hours, and effort to helping someone else fulfill their dream, while my dreams and aspirations are deferred or unfulfilled does not sit right in my soul.
Andre’, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Andre’ Lamar and I am a professional working Actor.
Initially, my interest in the entertainment field was music. My producer suggested taking acting classes to help with my stage presence. Those classes changed my life. It was almost full circle for me.
I grew up watching a lot of TV shows and movies but never saw myself in them. The first time I felt at peace was when I took an acting class. I felt as if I had finally found my niche!
My strong work ethic sets me apart from others. What I have noticed in my journey is that a lot of people are talented, but some of them don’t have a strong work ethic. I devote over 40 hours a week to honing my craft. Same as if I was working a fulltime job.
I am most proud of having opportunities to expand my career to include writing, producing, and directing.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A few years ago, I was released from my corporate job. To survive, I used credit cards and worked odd jobs but still faced the possibility of being homeless. I did not see a way out. I did not think that I would recover. With my back against the wall, I made a conscious decision to pursue my passion, acting full time.
I truly believe that faith and hard work will eventually pay off. This mindset has helped me to develop resilience. I had to keep going despite the adversities I faced along the journey that tried to knock me down. Now, I am finally able to do what I love and make a living. I am not rich but my bills are paid.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect is inspiring others to follow their dreams.
