We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andre Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andre below.
Andre, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
During my young years as a child my dear mother, Thelma, was diagnosed with cancer. During her treatment, my mother began to lose her hair. Instinctively, I wanted to do all I could to make her feel better. After much effort, I created my very first wig which was for my mother. This gave her a new found hope! I believe that if you look better on the outside you can actually begin to feel better and heal in the inside.
I never believed that I could actually work and make a living doing something that I absolutely love. My passion and expertise is not only in designing wigs for women and men, but also creating hairstyles with extensions, and cutting and styling hair. Most importantly maintaining healthy hair in order for my clients to feel more beautiful, confident and sexy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have worked as a hairstylist in the fashion and music industries for over twenty years, specializing in custom hair weaves, wigs and extensions, with expertise in women’s and men’s hair restoration.
Further, I was trained at the Vidal Sassoon academy and began my career at Astor Place Haircutters, renowned for the trendsetting styling of New York’s Greenwich Village in the 1990’s.
After working in the fashion and music industry, I became devoted to a private clientele relying on my expertise not only in alopecia, cancer, genetic thinning and balding, and over processed hair, but also creating iconic celebrity looks and styles.
Further, I was a lead stylist on TLC’s “A Model Life.” My work is also featured at the Academy Awards, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, WWD and Victoria’s Secret amongst others.
Currently, I provide all my services both in house and onsite in NY, Miami, LA, and abroad.
I am most proud of my children, Shalom and Ephrem, because they are my inspiration to be and give the very best of me in all I do.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is to be given the opportunity to have a client in my chair and to be trusted. This trust entails a collaboration between what my client desires and what I am able to bring to life.
My ultimate reward is when I have finished cutting and styling my client and they looks mirror -that swing of the hair and the beaming inside out and them saying “this is better than expected’ – then I know I did my job, it simply can’t get better than that!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to educate my clients in maintaining healthy hair achieved not only with cutting, conditioning, but also sharing with them knowledge on when to cut, how to dry and style, and maintain a healthy hair journey.
