We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful André Costantini. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with André below.
André, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
In 2008 I told a good friend and studio mate, “I wanted to make a
film about an artist.” And we talked about several subjects that might be great to make this project.
Flash forward.
A year later, I received a phone call from the same friend who had now moved to Brazil and he lead the conversation with “I found him” and I asked “what are you talking about?“ and he said “you wanted to make a feature film on an artist. I found him. He’s in Brazil.“
So I booked a trip to Brazil.
I brought my gear in the event that this film would happen. And the first day I met him we started filming. There was never a conversation if we should if we could or if we would make a film. But it was happening.
Three years later and five more trips to Brazil, we had completed a feature film which got to be seen by people all over the world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
All my life I’ve wanted to do art. I don’t think I’m a great artist. But it has always been my calling. How one sees themselves and how other people perceive them are two totally different things. But when I wake up in the morning, this is all I wanna do. I love all of the arts. I love visual, auditory, and movement. Figuring out how to be in the flow of any artistic endeavor is a beautiful experience.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
In any creative endeavor, you just have to do it. There’s so much fear in being able to do something. So of course there is also a level of hesitation. Procrastination and fear keeps so many people from doing the things that they should or could do. Ultimately, it does not matter if the art is good because the question of artistic expression is not about what the world thinks.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In a recent interview on a documentary film that I am working on, there was a subject that has a wonderful thesis on life. His goal was to be his authentic self. It comes with heartache. It comes with pain. But, at the end of the day, there is a satisfaction in knowing that there is sincerity in your life and art.
