We recently connected with Andre Calloway and have shared our conversation below.
Andre, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I have been a student of my craft since I first discovered music. Music is not only for my listening enjoyment, I study its intricacies and nuances to understand the creators frame of mind better. I research musicians from the most famous names to the most obscure. I also studied Audio Production in high school and college including music theory, acoustics, sound design, etc…I was a product of my time and youtube tutorials were non-existent when I started out. The access to the amount of information and technology of the present would have proven invaluable in my early days.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first started out as purely a recording artist in my teen years. Then I began to develop my production skills in high school and college. I attended Columbia College in Chicago for Sound Engineering and the Illinois Institute of Art – Chicago for Audio Production. I provide music production, mixing, mastering, and consulting while producing music for sync licensing in film ,TV, & social media as an independant artist and publisher. My music has been placed in MTV reality TV shows, PBS documentaries, stand up comedy specials, and much more. I am most proud of learning how to start my own businesses in the music industry and not relying on anyone for any step in the creative process. I am a one stop shop from beginning to finish.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The many hardships I’ve endured during my adult life alone shape who I am as a person and a creative. From losing custody of my children to foster care to a painful divorce and homelessness, I continued to remain ambitous. Even while living out of motels for years, I kept my studio equipment in use. I used my struggles as a creative driving force to eventually make a better life for me and my children who live with me full time.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing that I’m spending my years doing what I love for as long as I possibly can. When it’s my time to leave this earth, it will be with no regrets.
