We recently connected with Anastasiia Deriabina and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anastasiia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
I see the biggest trends in modern product photography such as:
-Incorporation of natural elements: It seems to me that this is one of the main trends in modern advertising photography. I follow it with big pleasure and I often use natural materials in my photographs.
-Lifestyle and storytelling: Product photography is increasingly incorporating real-life scenarios and narratives to create a connection between the product and the consumer.
-Minimalism: brands choose to showcase their products through clean and uncluttered compositions. By using minimal props and backgrounds. This approach creates a sense of elegance and simplicity.
-Despite the trend of minimalism, complex interesting compositions are also in trend now. I like both of these contradictory directions. Sometimes I shoot something very simple and elegant, sometimes I build towers of products and props.
-Unconventional angles and compositions: In a constantly competitive environment, it is necessary to experiment and stand out from others.
-Authenticity: There is a growing demand for product photography that showcases real people using the products. Consumers are seeking authenticity and want to see themselves represented in advertising. That’s why bloggers who talk about products are so popular now. They are ordinary people like you and me. Before products could only be endorsed by stars, models or famous people. Now advertisers go to people.
-Advertising shot on a mobile phone: it’s affordable, cost-effective compared to traditional professional cameras, as it eliminates the need for expensive equipment and specialized personnel. Lastly, mobile phone advertising resonates with audiences as it feels more reliable, aligning with the growing trend of user-generated content and social media influence. This is a good trend, I like it, sometimes I can shoot something with a phone camera, but having the skills of professional photography and having all the necessary equipment, I often use professional equipment in my work. The difference in quality is very different.
-Breaking away from industry standards and infusing it with creativity and authenticity. I like that trend the most.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am product photographer and prop stylist. Before coming to product photography, I photographed people for more than 10 years. This is probably why even now, when looking at some product that I need to shoot, I try to feel its character. And based on this, I create a set design around this hero (product). The prop styling process is my favorite part in my work, it is a very creative process.
I work with brands and create interesting and stylish content for them. The slogan on my website reads: «A great product photo is worth a thousand words
and potentially thousands of dollars in sales». I think I answered the question of how I help my clients: selling products using my photography skills.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission as a product photographer is to go beyond capturing mere images; I strive to create visual stories that evoke emotions, inspire curiosity, and ignite a sense of desire in viewers. Each product I photograph becomes an opportunity for me to showcase its unique essence, highlighting its features, craftsmanship, and purpose. I am driven by the belief that great product photography can transcend the boundaries of commerce and become a form of art that engages and captivates audiences.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Definitely it’s online education: courses and tutorials: Platforms like Udemy, Domestica, Skillshare, YouTube and many more. If only they were so common and accessible 10 years ago!
