We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anashea Debraux a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anashea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew that modeling was God’s calling for my life. They say that you are surrounded by your purpose throughout the course of your entire life, and I couldn’t agree more with that statement. Growing up I knew I always wanted to be some sort of entertainer. I loved being the center of attention. I always loved a good photo op. And I grew up doing beauty pageants, being the lead role in plays at my church, taking modeling classes, singing lessons, being in honors choir throughout the duration of my school career, dancing lessons, etc.
I always knew I loved fashion and that I loved to entertain. However, I didn’t know that modeling was God’s calling for my life until my senior year of high school. I thought music is what I wanted to do, and I thought this for so long. I rustled with the fact that I was falling out of love with music. It was no longer enjoyable for me and it began to feel more and more like a chore. I really knew I didn’t want to pursue music anymore when I stopped putting in effort.
It took a lot of prayer and overall talking to God to figure out what he wanted me to do. I still wanted to leave my ‘ecological foot’ on the world, inspire a countless amount of people, and to represent God in the work that I do. God showed me a vision, and ever since I’ve been doing what he’s called me to do.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in a blessed household with God fearing people. I’ve been beyond fortunate to have both parents in the household, along with my older brother. I was always into something pertaining to the entertainment field. My family supported me in exploring what it was in entertainment that I wanted to pursue. My parents funded me taking dance classes, modeling classes, singing lessons, beauty pageants and shows, acting classes, etc. I thank God for my parents, because if it wasn’t for them supporting my vision and allowing me to get to fully understand what God’s purpose is for my life by exploring my interests, and finding things I like, and ultimately what truly makes me the happiest, then I would not be here right now. Being consistent and bettering myself over time is how I got to where I am, and that is how I’m going to get to where I’m going. If you truly love something, then you will put time into it. One of my favorite quotes is “familiarity breeds confidence.” The more time you spend with something, the more familiar you are with it, therefore building confidence within that thing.
What really drives my passion in Modeling is that I know that it is God‘s given purpose for my life. I love the selfless aspects of modeling, as far as serving other people. A model’s job is to help make someone else’s vision come to life. There are so many businesses (small and big) and designers in the world that need models and influencers alike to really feed into the business owner’s and designer’s creative vision. According to online sources, 4.7 million businesses are started every year on average. Modeling is such a beautiful art form and is just like acting, except without any words.
I want anyone reading this to know that my relationship with God is the most important thing to me, and brings me the most pride and joy. I want to show young black women who look like me that anything is possible with God. Lastly, I want to show the world that you don’t have to disregard your ethics and your belief system in order to be successful.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would say that my biggest motivator is pleasing God and insuring that I fulfill the purpose he’s given me for my life. Through that, I just hope to inspire others to show thier love for God and not conform to what this world thinks is best.
Knowing that I have a really important reason to wake up in the morning besides myself, makes me happy. I love the selflessness of purpose, because it drives you to serve others and leave the world a better place than what you found it.
My family is also a really huge motivator, of course! Given the fact that they gave me space, and provided everything in order for me to find who I was created to be. For that I owe them everything.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn would probably be people pleasing, including the ones closest to you. No one knows the vision that God has given you for your life better than you. Trying to please and conform to others is ultimately going to result in your own unhappiness.
Being able to fully be my complete and whole self, through and through, doing things that make me happy at the end of the day, regardless of what anyone else thinks or has to say about it, has ultimately made me the happiest I’ve ever been.
