We recently connected with Anandita Yadav and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Anandita thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think it takes perseverance and hard work to be successful. Also, one has to know when to pivot and when to let go off an idea if it is not a good product market fit.
Anandita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am originally from India. Growing up in India, I remember wearing cotton clothes throughout the year. When I moved to the US, I found it really hard to find quality cotton clothing. I found that sadly even clothing marketed as cotton would often contain only a percentage of cotton blended with other sometimes synthetic fabrics. As a cotton lover, I was really disappointed by the limited options available for affordable, sustainable 100% cotton sleepwear and casual wear. I was also concerned about the environmental impact and labor practices associated with traditional textile production.
Determined to make a positive difference, I embarked on a mission to create a brand that offers ethically produced organic cotton sleepwear, and hence ‘Zillajee’ was born. ‘Zillajee’ is a sustainable sleepwear brand. Our pajama pants are made with 100% organic cotton using natural dyes. We are committed to ethical production and fair labor practices.
We have tried to design the brand around our customers’ specific needs. For example, our pajama pants come with big pockets for convenience and an adjustable waistband for a custom fit. Our Fall ’23 collection is now live and features a range of vibrant prints that are ideal for the holiday season. We are getting ready to launch our Winter’23 collection soon.
I think what sets us apart from our competitors is the quality of our cotton and the vibrant designs that we offer. Customer response has been great so far and we love hearing from our customers.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think apart from the product being good quality, the other thing that worked for us is really listening to customer feedback and pivoting if needed. Our goal is to absolutely delight the customer when they receive a ‘Zillajee’ product and we strive to make sure all our actions align with that goal.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We are available on our website www.zillajee.com as well as on Etsy.
I think as a new brand it is important to gain customer confidence. Customers might be more comfortable buying on a marketplace like Etsy. I think that is one of the pros of selling on a marketplace. Also, it takes a while to establish good SEO for a new website and brand so a marketplace is a really good option for those initial few months as it provides an additional channel to sell your products.
The con being that the you have no control over customer experience and it’s harder to stand out as a brand on a marketplace because of the competition.
