We were lucky to catch up with Anais Magee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anais, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I were to start over, I would do a lot more research into different waxes and wicks. There are so many different waxes I would have tested a few more. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love the wax I use which is a coconut soy wax. I would test a few different natural waxes. With Wicks, that is project in itself. You have to use the correct wick that works with the wax and fragrance oil. Speaking of fragrance, I would take time into researching fragrance and affects an individual mood.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Anais. I am the owner of Scents By Siana. The dream of being a candle maker started in 2016. I didn’t start the journey until 2020 during the pandemic. I made my first candle in October of 2020. I knew it was for me. I knew I wanted to have a candle business that was natural and vegan friendly. My candles are made from coconut soy wax. I use wood wicks that are ethically sourced and earth friendly. All our fragrance oils are phthalate free. Our main candle vessel is glass. I love to repurpose the candle vessel so that Iam just not throwing it away.
I also make custom labels for my clients. What better way to celebrate any occasion than with a custom label candle that you can keep even after you are done using the candle.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
The way that I stay connected with my clients by going live on social medica, sending out emails. Since we live in a social media world it is important that I show up and be constant. Allowing clients into my process. I love getting feedback after a client gets a candle. Also ask for feedback on what they would like to see next.
Sending emails is important in how I reach people who may not have social media. My clients who sign up to my email list are always the first to know when anything is going to change or even if there is a sale.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is, it’s not about me. What I mean by that is I can’t just make candles that I like. I have to step out of my comfort zone and do things that make me feel uncomfortable. When you are uncomfortable that is when you can grow. Around the fall season aka pumpkin season. If I’m honest, while i enjoy eating pumpkin spice muffins and enjoying all the pumpkin spice drinks I am not a fan of a pumpkin spice candle scent. I also know while i don’t enjoy it there are people who do. Understanding that I had to make a pumpkin scented candle. If you are a pumpkin scented candle lover, I have the perfect candle for you!
