We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ana Nguyen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My biggest risk was leaving a salaried job to start my own business without any saved money. I jumped in and hoped for the best. It was such a risk since I have big household and my husband wouldn’t be able to support our household on 1 income. Also starting a business is expensive so I had to figure out how to pay for the business to be able to give my family a better future.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have done many many jobs in my lifetime such as chef, medical assistant, office manager, banquet manager, accounting manager and many more jobs but the one thing that they all have in common is the want to help people. I worked as an office manager for a home health agency and saw all the needs of the elderly so I decided to become a medical assistant to help people. As much as I enjoyed working in the medical field it was exhausting and it felt like I wasn’t helping people enough and it was a dead-end job. I was given the opportunity to work for a public adjuster as her administrative assistant that introduced me into a field that allowed me to work on my time, make really good money but most of all help people that are getting taken advantage that think they have no options. Becoming a public adjuster gave me everything I have always wanted.
So the question now is what is a Public Adjuster and what do I do, well I represent policyholders against insurance company when a claim is denied or underpaid. Dealing with a claim is very much a headache so my job is take those headaches away and maximize the claim payment. The way I do that is by estimating, negotiating, settling, keeping up with deadlines and communicating with adjusters for inspections. I specialize in personal property and have even developed a software to assist homeowners in putting a content estimate together when there is a claim that has caused significant loss of personal property.
If I could say what makes me stand out from other public adjusters is that I help no matter how small or big a claim is I will help. Most public adjuster firms only take claims bigger than a certain amount I believe the amount is $50,000. I don’t feel like it is fair to people that live in smaller homes or smaller claims that are getting wrongfully denied or underpaid. Everyone needs help and education when it comes to insurance claims. I also pride myself in my style of communication and providing updates when requested, I provide boutique style services.
The thing I am most proud of is always and I mean always putting my clients first even if that means I have waive my fees. To me clients are first, second and third.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy is going out to network and educating people when it comes to their right and responsibilities when there is a claim or even before a claim happens. Too often people know they have a policy for their home, business or even renters insurance but do not know what coverages they have or what they are entitled to.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I started my business I didn’t have capital or investors so in order to be able to pay for the expenses of a new business I had to be subcontract some of my other skills such as bookkeeping for contractors, estimating personal property for attorneys and pretty much anything so that my business would continue to grow.
