We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ana Mosco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
There are definitely many changes that the education system can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career. First of all, I think it would be great if the education system placed a greater emphasis on teaching students more practical life skills. Skills such as money management, time management , and problem solving. Secondly, I think that it is important for schools promote more creative opportunities for students. Opportunities where they could experience different forms of art and music and styles.
Lastly, I think that mental health should become an important part of the educational system. I think that by helping students become more emotionally intelligent and by helping them deal and understand their emotions, they will be better able to adjust to real life problems and help them navigate this fast paced and innovative world we are currently living in.
As a first generation Latina, growing up I was taught that the only way to be successful in life would be to attend college. Although, I tried my best in school , I realized that school was just not my thing. Often times, I look back and wished I would of skipped all those years in college and just go after what I loved doing best, which is flowers. As I mom, I make sure to teach my kids that college is amazing, but if that they have the opportunity to find something they love to do and are good at, they should make that their career. I try and instill in them that money isn’t always the most fulfilling. I want my kids to be happy and hope one day they can make a career out of something they love.
Ana , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ana Mosco. I am a wife and mother of 3 kids. Married to my high school sweetheart. Growing up my dad worked as a delivery driver for a very well established flower shop in Beverly Hills. At the time, I remember occasions where both my parents worked at the flower shop during busy seasons. They would bring my brother and I to work. That is when my love for florals started. I remembered that I just loved being around flowers. I remember just seeing designers design theses beautiful arrangements. I just new that one day I would love to have my own flower shop. I went to school and obtained a 2 year degree in both business and sociology. Life happened and I got pregnant and married at the age of 21. Decided to start a family and fast forward to 2020 like many moms I know, Realized that I had lost myself in motherhood. I didn’t know who I was anymore, other than a mother and a wife. The pandemic was definitely very hard on me emotionally , I felt lost with so much anxiety and even depression. Deep down inside of me I had always known that I had something special in me. A deep desire to create and I realized that I had let my emotions dictate and stop me from doing more for myself and my family. Realizing that I was letting my creativity go to waste was definitely a hard pill to swallow. I knew I had to do something and make changes in my life. My husband told me that I wasn’t getting any younger and that the time to go after my dream of becoming a flower shop owner was now. So with all of the fear and anxiety I pushed my self to pursue my dream and I started my small business from home. Floristry, became my creative outlet and it has brought so much joy into my life, I’ve been able to meet and work with some very talented, amazing and kind people. The road has not been easy, however I have enjoyed every second of it. I am still very much learning so many things as far as business goes, but I have definitely enjoyed every struggle. I think that is what I am most proud of when it comes to my business. The fact , that I started it from nothing all while battling
my own internal battles. I think the thing that separates me most from other florists is that I have a great love for my craft , and the thing that drives me the most is the opportunity I get each time I get to create not so much the money. I would want my future clients to know that I definitely, pour all the love into everything I create. I love a good challenge and thrive to think outside of the box when it comes to creating.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think that starting my business during the pandemic has definitely shown me how resilient I truly am. I started my business with the tiniest amount of motivation and all of the anxiety in the world. I had always known that I was meant to do flowers and start my own business, However, I always had this fear of failure. I didn’t know what I would be getting myself in to. In all honesty, if it wasn’t for my husband’s support it probably might have taken me bit longer. Flowers, have definitely , been an amazing a big part of my healing journey and have helped me find myself again. Growing my business, on Instagram has not been easy, but I have learned so much along the way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of my main missions driving my creative journey is definitely, setting an example to my children that it is never to late to go after your passions. I want them to know that school is not the only option to becoming successful. I want my daughters to know that they are more than capable of becoming their own boss . My wish for them is for them to look at my journey as an example so that they too can follow their passions and pursue a career that they love.
