We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ana Kim. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ana below.
Alright, Ana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am happy to have a job that allows me to unleash my creativity and manage my time according to my own artistic schedule. My current work lifestyle revolves around the freedom to create, promote, and communicate ideas related to various projects and exhibitions. In addition to these responsibilities, I also engage in teaching, attending art fairs, and participating in artists’ meetings.
During the gaps between projects, I actively pursue learning opportunities in diverse fields, including other art forms. I am grateful for the autonomy I have in managing my own projects and schedule, and I find great satisfaction in the routine of my life as an artist. Nevertheless, I occasionally ponder how my life would differ if I were engaged in a regular job that adhered to specific working hours and tasks assigned by a team.
Currently, I haven’t taken on any commission orders, although numerous people have expressed interest in my work. If I were to start accepting commissions, I imagine that it would introduce me to some aspects of a regular job structure.
Ana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been working as a full-time artist ever since I graduated with a BFA degree. During my studies, I had the opportunity to explore the works of numerous artists in the field, which inspired me to pursue a career as an artist myself. However, being a full-time artist comes with its own challenges, particularly when it comes to financial stability since there is no fixed salary in this profession. I also encountered difficulties in establishing my artistic themes and navigating contracts with art businesses. Nevertheless, I am dedicated to building my career and cultivating relationships within the art community, and I find immense joy in pursuing my passion.
As an artist, my primary focus is on creating artwork that revolves around the themes of saving the Earth and protecting the lives of animals. Through my paintings, I strive to convey a powerful message to my audience and motivate them to take action. Simultaneously, I also create pieces that aim to provide visual satisfaction. I want viewers to appreciate the intricacies of my color palette and artistic techniques simply by observing my artwork. It brings me great satisfaction when people compliment my unique artistic style and choose to collect my works. To further advance my artistic career, I continuously exert myself to reach out to potential clients and strengthen my artistic portfolio.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Many individuals appreciate and enjoy viewing completed artworks, but often they fail to comprehend the extensive time, costs of materials, shipping expenses, and other contributions involved in creating a single piece. This lack of understanding is likely a contributing factor to the perception that art is excessively expensive. I aspire for society to develop a deeper appreciation for the artist’s perspective and to provide artists with encouragement to persist in their creative endeavors without succumbing to discouragement.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most gratifying aspects of being an artist is when individuals genuinely appreciate my work and continue to follow my artistic journey. Hearing compliments such as “I’ve never seen paintings like yours before,” “Your style is truly unique,” or “I look forward to purchasing your artwork in the future” fills me with joy. Whenever someone becomes a dedicated fan of my work, it serves as a tremendous inspiration and encouragement for me to strive even harder and create even better paintings.
