Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ana Carreto. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
Building a team has been one of the hardest parts for me, and after many lessons I understood that finding someone we can trust has to do not only with others but with ourselves as business owners. Let me explain you why:
At the beginning, as an amateur entrepreneur, I would believe everything I was told and give all the power to the members of my team – even before hiring them!
I realized that as I didn’t believe enough in myself, I would doubt every single idea / plan I had for marketing, sales, and accounting – for my own business! So I would approve what they used to tell me even if didn’t feel right to me. After many personal and internal work, I realized that not being a professional in that field (let’s say in marketing), didn’t mean that others could take advantage of me, and it would only stop if I knew how things worked and made some adjustments in the hiring process.
Hiring someone now is not only about “what they know” or what “they’ve reached” in their previous jobs or clients, of course it has to do, but it is more about me feeling listened, asking all the professional questions I have without feeling bad for them, giving a trial period, asking for real work references and actually contacting them, seeing in her/him not only the professional I am about to include in my team but the human and her/his values, being sure s/he understands my goals and can make them part of her/his life.
Intuition plays a big role, too. Believe me, if your mind is telling you to do it but there’s something inside you telling you not to, listen to the second one.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Easy! Bausse Beauty is a cosmetics brand that welcomes everyone. We were tired of listening the same speech and finding out that the inclusive word didn’t include the ones with a tight budget, or the ones who really believe in trying different products, and many others!
We are proud of being a Latino brand, 100% Mexican.
Also, we donate to several charity causes like the favelas in Brazil and to protect wild animals in danger of extinction. Beauty can be connected with many good actions and we try hard to do our part!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Many! But the most significant lesson I had to unlearn was the fear of failure. Not only because I was tired of caring about what others might think if I failed, but because of my own good. I was allowing that fear to stop me doing the things that could move me forward to achieve my goals, it might sound silly but that fear was stopping me (and my business) to succeed while others didn’t even care if I failed or not.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being myself. What has helped me the most to grow my clientele (B2B and B2C) is simply being my genuine self with our marketing content, sales, and clients who trust us. We tend to do what others are doing, what it’s “trendy” or what the experts say, we follow everything by the book.
There are some truths behind that, but the most important thing is to take what makes us feel ourselves, what we truly feel connected with.
For example, if there’s a type of content everyone’s doing but you don’t feel comfortable by doing it, don’t!
If you end up doing it because “you have to”, it might work – I can’t tell, but you’ll find yourself lost after doing things you didn’t want to.
And last but not least, before talking about us with our clients, I like to know about them, what they like, what they’re looking for, what they truly need, and see if we’ll be a good team together – selling them is not the most important but having this win-win partnership.
