We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ana Áboli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have always been quite creative and dreamy since I was a little kid. I spent most of my afternoons with my grandmother, my “Lala,” doing crafts, cooking and inventing new games. I hope not to sound corny, but I have to admit that becoming a mother changed my life completely, giving me a new sense of creativity that needed to be developed. I started experimenting with gourmet bakery recipes and developing themes for family celebrations. My sixth son’s birthday party was an inflection point in my journey. I prepared a thematic party with bespoke sweet creations. The success was so enormous that a friend suggested I should start my own business. And there it was: “Confetti in my Pockets” had just been born!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Ana Áboli, though everyone knows me as Ana Confetti, after my business Confetti in my Pockets. Ten years ago, I started a brand focused on creating unique and artisanal themed parties, along with completely personalized gifts. I wasn’t actively seeking it, but the business found me. My passion for creativity has always been evident – whenever there was a birthday or special celebration, I was there, unleashing my imagination to delight both the guest of honor and the attendees.
If you attend one of our parties, you’ll likely end up with confetti in your pockets, and who can deny that it represents happiness? I had a vision, and I gave it a name.
I’ve learned the ropes of the business on the go, investing more time and money into a project I wholeheartedly believe in. Along the way, I delved into baking techniques and discovered a world that captivated me.
I merged my love for baking with celebrations by creating personalized cookie boxes featuring bespoke phrases, drawings, or images for the recipient. I chose hexagonal cookies, as they perfectly symbolize my brand – neither round nor square, and now they’re a distinctive feature of Confetti in my Pockets.
For Candy bars, I sought a unique touch. No two candy tables are identical, even if they share the same theme. Each person is different, and I believe everyone deserves to be the main character of their moment. That’s why every detail, idea, material, and pastry is special and unique, crafted by hand.
I take pride in persisting in the pursuit of my dream for over 10 years, despite the challenges. There were moments when giving up seemed tempting, but here I am, still ready to dive in and make it happen.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Witnessing everything you’ve meticulously designed and preconceived come to life is the initial moment of satisfaction. However, undoubtedly, the most gratifying impact comes from seeing the honoree’s face, filled with joy and amazement as they discover your work. This overwhelming sense of fulfillment eclipses all the challenging moments along the way
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Since I was little, I grew up hearing that everything I did creatively was simply a hobby, and that I should channel all my energy into studying something “useful,” something with a future. It took me a while to realize that my “hobby” could also be my business and that everything I had been taught as a child was not true. The beliefs of our past do not necessarily reflect the realities of our present, and who knows if what we believe now could shape our future. We have to live based on what our hearts tell us and channel all our energy into what truly makes us happy, even if others label us as crazy. Let’s take the risk!
