We caught up with the brilliant and insightful An Hayward a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
An, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Presently residing in Pensacola, FL, my focus has been directed towards a project that carries profound personal significance. Over the past three years, I’ve dedicated my time and effort to volunteering with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in their thrift store. Through the generous donations received, I’ve curated a boutique experience within the store, with all proceeds directly supporting the Alfred Washburn Center—a haven for the homeless and less privileged members of our Pensacola, FL community. The fulfillment I’ve derived from this endeavor surpasses any pursuit I’ve undertaken, even my enduring 30-year modeling career.
What sets this project apart is the direct impact I’ve been able to make, a far cry from merely writing a check. The gratification of enacting genuine change through hands-on involvement is truly immeasurable. It has illuminated the fact that impact isn’t solely tethered to the spotlight; it’s found in the authentic transformation we foster through direct engagement.
Witnessing the immediate effects, the smiles that grace faces, and the heartfelt warmth of making a tangible difference have revolutionized my sense of purpose and satisfaction. This particular chapter of my life has been transformative, casting compassion and service onto center stage. It stands as a reminder that authentic fulfillment resides in the positive change we bring about in the lives of others.

An, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey has taken me from the graceful stages of ballet to the vibrant world of fashion, and now, to a fulfilling role as a volunteer at St Vincent De Paul.
My name is An Hayward, and I was born in the vibrant city of Antwerp, Belgium. From a young age, I was captivated by the world of dance, particularly ballet. The discipline, dedication, and artistic expression that ballet demanded became the foundation of my character. For years, I graced stages as a professional ballet dancer at the Royal Ballet of Flanders in Antwerp, each performance telling a story through movement.
Yet, as life often does, it gently guided me onto a new stage. My love for ballet transitioned into a 30-year modeling career that would see me collaborating with visionaries, creators, and fellow artists from around the globe. This path allowed me to celebrate diversity, embrace individuality, and work alongside creative minds who valued authenticity. I discovered the power of fashion as a form of self-expression, and through my modeling work, I represented the unique narratives of many businesses, independent artists, and creatives.
My life took yet another meaningful turn when I became the first lady of Pensacola, FL. This role gave me the opportunity to connect deeply with the community, understanding the stories, hopes, and challenges of the people in my community.
But life’s most remarkable twists often come in the form of humble opportunities. Now, I find myself in a role that is profoundly fulfilling: a volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul, where I utilize my eclectic background to create positive experiences for shoppers. At St. Vincent De Paul, I collect, sort, and organize second-hand clothing, transforming donations into looks that empower individuals to embrace their unique style on a budget. I believe that true style knows no price tag and that creativity flourishes when resources are limited.
My experiences as a ballet dancer, model, and former first lady have taught me that true beauty lies in authenticity, and that small businesses, local artists, and creatives have stories that deserve to be celebrated.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne is a book that has profoundly shaped my perspective. It’s a constant presence by my bedside, serving as a daily reminder that the principles outlined within are not new revelations, but rather a guide on how to effectively apply them. As someone who resonates with visual learning, I’ve practiced visualization for a considerable time, and it has undeniably played a pivotal role in my journey to success. The book has reinforced the notion that the tools for success are often within our grasp; it’s the skillful application of these tools that truly counts.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most gratifying facet of being a creative lies in the ability to craft a realm of fantasy, a space where individuals can momentarily escape. At St. Vincent de Paul, when curating looks in the store, my aim is to provide visitors with an experience, particularly considering that many of them endure challenging lives. Creating a haven where they can find solace and inspiration is immensely fulfilling.
