We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amya “Roxxstar” Meekins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
As a business owner, I feel as though I feel more content with myself working for myself rather than others. It’s something about watching what you create from scratch evolve into something so beautiful. I do feel as though I am more into my purpose as a business owner so therefore I am happier despite the rough times. If I had a regular job, I feel like I would be fine but eventually get tired and want to express new ideas for my own career in business. I would spend so many hours daydreaming about how to pursue what I want or ideas. Last year, I had a job that was not a hard job to even do but I spent so many hours wishing I could use that time accordingly.
Amya , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my professional music career at the age of 11 years old but started dancing when I was 4 years old. “Wristroxx” was my first ever single produced by Morris Mega Media. During that time, I did plenty of remixes to the hottest songs trending. As I got a little older, I began to travel and was once on two tours at once. The more I traveled and learned more gifts that I have. By me being in the entertainment industry and always in front of cameras and on stage, I got introduced to makeup. Makeup then became an avenue that I started to love. My skin complexion is more melanated with red undertones so it was harder to find makeup to match me better. Years later, I founded my own cosmetic line that is vegan and cruelty-free for all people. My skin complexion has also allowed to me write a book called the “The Life of a Teenage Girl”. My main reasoning on why I do what I do is to teach people to love the skin they’re in despite the opinions of others.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started to gain a presence on social media by traveling all over the states performing and speaking. My peers and I would constantly promote each other and people started to want to interact and keep up with what I was doing. I met a lot of the people who follow me and are consistent on my platforms at least once before and left my mark with them. Social media is very important when it comes to promoting your business since you can reach people from all over the world just from marketing on apps. The quickest way to build your social media presence is by knowing who you’re targeting, be yourself and being consistent with your content. The best app to use right now is Tiktok in regards to promotion since the followers from there will follow you onto other apps.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building my reputation came from me doing my own makeup with my products and just taking pictures or going around people. It sparked questions from many and allowed to promote my own products. My brand started to grow mostly through word of mouth.
