Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amya “Roxxstar” Meekins . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amya , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I created Jean Cosmetics, it was due to the lack of beauty brands having my skin complexion in makeup growing up in the entertainment industry. The brands that different artist would use on my face either made me have a white cast when pictures were taken or too dark. It was very important to me for girls who look like me and other races be represented throughout my brand. I would like for young ladies growing up to feel represented no matter what age, race, or ethnicity. It will help encourage young ladies to feel more confident in their own appearances.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Motivational speaker, writer, ambassador, stylist and artist; Amya “Roxxstar” Meekins can now add Cosmetic line owner and MUA to her list. Amya started her career as a dancer and rapper at the age of 9. Amya has been a part of several national tours performing in 16 states and 35 cities to date; being featured as the opening act of several major productions such as: Camden Jam and Universal Soul Circus.
Amya was also a certified fashion ambassador for Nordstrom’s department stores and a teen ambassador for Yelle Skin Care. Amya has also been featured in 12 different publications, 13 different radio shows, as well as 3 different national `morning news shows.
She has won numerous awards forBEST FEMALE SOLO ARTIST, TEEN HUMANITARIAN, and a TEEN ENTREPRENEUR AWARD for her online/traveling boutique. In 2019 she received the VISIONARY AWARD from Fighting 4 Youth, the NEXT GENERATION YOUTH AWARD from the NAACP.
From her love of mentoring her peers to encourage them to be the best form of themselves, Miss Amya was motivated to formulate a workshop entitled BE the B.R.A.N.D which encourages her fellow Gen Z-ers. Her goal of this workshop is to encourage her peers to use their voice to make a change. She raised money for the Newark Water Crisis and partnered with the Willingboro NAACP with the donation. She also donated toys to youth in Trenton, NJ for the holidays. She was also featured with a supporting role in the independent film ROAD TO TRUTH and the web series Water Makes the Blood Run.
In May of 2019, Amya has released her first book: THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL, to address issues that she felt were important and not touched on enough like colorism, bullying and gun violence. She had the pleasure of hosting a book signing at Barnes and Noble Westbank in Harvey, LA during Essence Festival Weekend.
With all of this Amya managed to graduate high school at 16, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She also has
an ASSOCIATE’S degree in Applied Science from Rowan College at Burlington County.
On February 14, 2022 Amya released her cosmetic line, JEAN COSMETICS. She is planning the official launch on August 6, 2022. The line holds products of lash adhesive, eyeshadow palettes, lip gloss, eyeliner and lip liner. She plans to release more products in the future.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first realized that I wanted to create a cosmetic line, I knew I was up for a challenge but was ready to accept whatever came with it. It took tons of research in regards to other brands, products, to-dos, not to-dos, and more. I did get a little discouraged once I released my first product since I was new to the beauty industry but I felt it wasn’t selling fast enough. I learned more about the industry and etc, now I am becoming successful as time goes on. My product selection has now grew and will continue to grow in the future. All of my products are selling and the customers love each and every item. I plan on increasing with more products and constantly improving with the quality of each one.
