We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amya Martin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amya below.
Amya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear a story from back when you were an intern or apprentice. What’s a memorable story you can share with us?
I would like to lead this discussion by saying first off, Internships in real life are definitely not as bad as they are in movies lol. Ive only had one internship, but they definitely changed my perspective on my whole career and just life in general. It’s so much to be taught when you’re willing to listen to constructive criticism and the support I have around me, that’s the push I needed. I was used to being praised and told my work is fine, but working with Mykel Firm they have taught it’s okay to know something and still learn how to do it better than before. I will forever be grateful for every person, lesson, long nights etc. with my team.. forever grateful for Terrius Mykel & New Order Media Group. I say all that to say, don’t doubt yourself and don’t limit yourself to what you know… branch out, network, talk to your community because opportunity is around the corner.
Amya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Amya Martin (Nax), a creative based out of the East Side of Atlanta. I started off doing photography in 2016 just to be doing something and fast forward a whole 6 years later.. I’ve reached heights a 15-year-old little I wouldn’t have imagined. As I am now almost 21, I am transitioning more into cinematography be cause I feel as if I’m able to express myself better through visuals. I am proud of everything that has come with this journey through the years because there were times I didn’t think it was going to work out. I am more mature now and able to grasp what life sits in front of me and that has opened a lot of new doors. Now to my current, future, and past supporters/clients y’all have shaped me as a business owner and a person, I’m extremely grateful for you all. Also to my Family & Loved Ones, even those who may not want to see me prosper.. I am praying for you all & hope we get to see the top of this journey together. 1LOVE4L.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When you think of an influence, you think it takes big numbers because they are what’s relevant in today’s time. I honestly never thought of myself as an influencer because I didn’t have much of a following, but little did I know in those tiny numbers… there were people looking up to me as a person and how I do what I do with my business. I built my following today by just showing up for people and loving them for who they are. I learned transparency is the key to gaining a audience, we go through so much alone that we think nobody is able to relate. Branch out & talk to your community, be that shoulder to lean on sometimes. When higher powers give you a higher calling, you must take heed to what the universe is trying to tell you. Find out who YOU are as a person, then transition that thought to who you want to be for your career (write it down!) put in the work and listen… life is your biggest teacher so always pay attention to the signs and everything else will follow suit.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As young adults, the weight of the world is on our shoulders and it becomes too much to manage sometimes. I had to learn that’s its okay to have bad moments, but you don’t have a bad life! I battled for years with myself, my career, life, etc. All before I reached 20 so I can only imagine what others have to deal with, but don’t be so hard on yourself! I would’ve quit a long time ago, yet every time I try to the universe brings me out my bad moment. No matter the time… I end up exactly where I need to be i need to be every time. That’s the reality of being a business owner, people don’t understand that we are humans too and we need breaks for our mental as well. Rest, Eat Well, Do right by others and just live! Life is so much bigger than a bad moment
