Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Young. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media pages! Like anything else, there are pros and cons to managing your own socials. The pros being it’s the cheaper option, you don’t need to teach somebody how to promote your specific business, you’re able to use your own experience to keep up with the trends of your industry. Now the cons – it’s extremely time consuming, especially if you’re not familiar keyword searches, algorithms, content creation, branding, marketing, and SEO management.

Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Amy Young and I am a photographer from the Boston area. My love for photography started at a very young age. Everyone in my life called me a photographer long before I ever considered myself one, now it’s a major part of who I am! While music photography is my specialty, I am also well-versed in portraits, events, and the in-between. Although I am self-taught, I studied the business side of photography online with New York Institute of Photography back in 2014.
My first official event was for The Cohasset Working Dog Foundation in 2016. That opened a lot of doors for me in terms of special events. I’ve covered several benefits since as well as weddings, engagements, bridal showers, etc. I love getting to work with my clients to create lifelong memories in a snap! There is truly nothing better than being able to preserve those special moments for people and getting to see the joy it brings them.
I started concert photography in 2013. I worked with a lot of local bands, I’d be nowhere without them. In 2017, I began working with Joe McCourt of Rockin Images covering larger, local bands at venues like Showcase Live in Foxoborough. Working alongside Joe helped grow my confidence and sense of style in terms of photography. I later went on to work with outlets such as Scene Daddy, The Midwest Metal Show, and The Asylum Radio Network. While I’m still with MWMS and ARN, I just recently began a new adventure all on my own! I created the music news outlet One-Twenty Decibels, allowing myself and others to cover live music all across the country. This gives me the ability to help others get the experience and opportunities that I was lucky enough to have been given so early on in my career.
Regardless of the type of photography or whatever the business is, a couple things to remember are that it takes patience and consistency to get anywhere with it. You’re not going to just jump right in and immediately be successful — lots trial and error. But it’s worth it in the end. I think the number one thing to remember is to have fun along the way.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Honestly, all of the people I’ve had the privilege to work with thus far helped me out immensely. Specifically those who worked with me when I was just starting out. They believed in me and my capabilities when I didn’t even believe in myself. They allowed me to grow my portfolio and share their moments across social media to promote myself and my business.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is getting to capture those big, unforgettable moments for people or even making them see themselves the way that the rest of the world sees them. One of the responses I hear most often after sending a client their gallery is, “I didn’t know I could look like that!” Creative and boudoir shoots often create that sort of response. There’s a reason the portrait section on my website is titled “The Beautiful People.” I love that I’m able to simply capture the beauty of each client and their special events!
