We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Weh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.
Amy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Working on many artist in residence mosaic murals. The experiences I had led me actually to quitting my retail manager job of a frame shop to becoming an elementary teacher. Stretching young brains with my own art experiences.
Amy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! I’m Mosaicweh, and I’ve been passionately crafting mosaics using found and repurposed materials for years. My journey into mosaics began as a way to combine my love for art and the joy of finding beauty in forgotten objects, like bottle caps, broken glass, or rusted metal. My pieces range from small intricate designs to large-scale mosaics, each with its own unique story and materials. What sets me apart is my dedication to reimagining discarded items and giving them a new life in art. I don’t just create visually striking mosaics; I offer a creative outlet where sustainability meets fine art. Whether it’s art work for someone’s home or a piece that evokes an emotional response, I aim to connect with my clients through my art. I’m proud to offer original, one-of-a-kind pieces and constantly experiment with new techniques and designs. I want my followers to know that every piece I make is filled with intention, creativity, and the belief that art can be accessible to everyone, while still being unique and handmade.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One thing that non-creatives may struggle to understand is the time, patience, and detail that goes into each mosaic I create. Every piece is a lengthy process, from conceptualizing the design to carefully selecting the materials and arranging them in a way that tells a story. It’s not something that can be rushed, and this is why I don’t typically take on custom requests. I need complete creative control to explore and experiment with my materials, ideas, and techniques without the limitations or expectations of a specific outcome. This allows me to stay true to my art and ensure that every piece is authentic, original, and meaningful.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To best support artists and foster a thriving creative ecosystem, society needs to actively invest in original art and the artists behind it. When purchasing art, it’s important to recognize the difference between reproductions and original pieces. Reproductions can be made in unlimited quantities with just a click, but original art is the product of countless hours, unique materials, and the personal vision of the artist – it’s one-of-a-kind. By buying original art, you’re not only supporting the creativity and craftsmanship of the artist but also contributing to the broader cultural landscape, ensuring that creative artists continue to be heard and valued.
