We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Tripp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I wish I started my business sooner, but I didn’t because I needed to gain business experience and did not know where to start. I wasn’t confident I could make astrology a full-time job. My business started as a side hustle, like it does for many others. At the time, I worked a miserable 9-5 job and would come home at night to do astrology consultations and create social media content.
I should have started my business 2 to 3 years before it fully formed. I had many people reach out to me for consultations, but I needed a proper website, for example, and all the other things that need to be in place to have a “real” business. I played small and never considered I could make a living from my astrology. I wish I had not placed limits on myself regarding what I could accomplish, and I regret not believing in myself more because I left a lot of money on the table.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into astrology accidentally. I never intended to become an astrology
I mostly provide astrology services, one on one consultations, that include compatibility consultation and consultations for finding a best date for an event, such as surgery. I also offer a variety of automated astrology reports and recordings from workshops I conduct for purchase. Creatively, I create content on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok daily to help people become more knowledgable about astrology.
When clients book me they are usually looking for some sort of clarity or insight.
What sets me apart from other astrologers is I have a formal education for counseling. I have a BA in Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Masters in Social Work from NYU. I also passed a rigorous six-hour test to certify me as an ISAR (International Society of Astrological Research) astrologer.
I’m by far most proud that I built this business from the ground-up almost all on my own.
I want my customers and followers to know
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is what started my business. I began an astrology Twitter account for fun and it quickly grew. From the day I started tweeting, I was consistent (posting every day), and I engaged with other members of the astrology community and my followers. A few people with much larger accounts (influences) would repost my content. This exposure was very beneficial for growing a larger audience. Lastly, I’m authentic and relatable. I give people a peak into my private life, the good and the bad, so they can get to know me better. I’m also not shy about sharing my opinions, especially on important issues. Not everyone likes what I say, but that’s okay because I attract people who resonate with me.
My advice for anyone trying to build a social media audience is to be consistent. Of course, your content should also be good, but consistency is critical. Also, remember that social media is a long game, and you must be patient. The rewards are not immediate, so keep going and continue posting.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word-of-mouth referrals are the best source of new clients for me besides people who find me through social media. I tend to gain clients “influencers” post about me.
