We were lucky to catch up with Amy Tripp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
The defining moment in my career came when I decided to move to New York City. Prior to moving I was living in eastern North Carolina. Since I had never lived outside of North Carolina it was a big move for me but it was the best thing I ever did because a lot of opportunities came my way I never would have gotten in North Carolina. Opportunities to write articles, be on podcasts, and network with other astrologers propelled me forward to be able to make astrology my full-time job.
Amy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I never intended on becoming an astrologer. One day I thought about getting a reading but they were expensive and I didn’t know if it was real so I decided I wanted to teach myself. From then on I studied astrology everyday until I was able to understand it and talk about. It was then that I started a social media account to share what I’d learned and talk to other astrologers. My account was successful and was the driver for my business. People found me through social media and over time I was able to quit my full time job. I provide astrology consultations and also automated reports on my site. My consultations are either 30 min or 1 hour over the phone. During these consultations we often talk about what to expect in the year ahead along with any specific areas of concern such as career or relationships. I think my license in social work sets me apart from others who do what I do. Because I’ve been trained as a counselor I feel like I’m able to build a good report with my clients and effectively communicate with them. I’m most proud of how I was able to turn a side hobby until a full-time profession. I taught myself everything I know and didn’t have much help when I started my business so I feel truly self-made. The main thing I’d like people to know about my work is that is comes from a place of authenticity. A lot of people in the spiritual community don’t have the best intentions and take advantage of vulnerable people and I never want people to think I’m that way. I always try to keep the client’s best interest in mind.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for building clientele is providing quality services. By providing services clients are happy with they are likely to come back and refer friends to you. Being consistent on social media has also helped build my clientele. This is the first way people found me. I was able to grow my audience by posting interesting content and engaging with my followers.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was at my peak on social media I had a competitor call me a scammer which did irreparable damage to my reputation. When this happened I lost followers and was alienated by the astrology community. I was extremely upset about this and didn’t think it was fair, but I used the pain it caused me to grow my business. It pushed me to start a TikTok which I wish I started sooner. So far this has been a successful expansion of my business.
