We recently connected with Amy Stewart and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The boutique brand Dax + Jade was named and inspired by my two little one, Emma Jade, and Noah Dax.
When my youngest was still in diapers I was looking for a creative outlet, having had put my design career on hold on care for him, I was going stir crazy not being creatively challenged.
After far too many hours piddling away on Pinterest I had an idea to make bath products as Christmas gifts that year for loved ones.
The products turned out to be a big hit, making me curious what else I could make. Before long I had a full product line and two months later, dax + jade, was created.
Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
dax + jade is a boutique brand with small southern roots, nestled in the heart of Central Texas.
Founded in 2018 and affectionately named after my two little ones, Emma Jade and Noah Dax, dax + jade has a mission to share the love of creating hand crafted body and beauty products with a personalized approach to gift giving.
I wanted to make sure that my brand was quality, natural, and unique and therefore great effort and love is put into every step of every product. From recipes, to making, to packaging, every item is made to order and made by hand by your truly.
dax + jade offers a variety of hand scented and poured soy candles, soy wax melts, bath bombs, sugar scrubs, fragrance rollerballs, lip balms, and more.
Once dax + jade was established and my kids were old enough to go off to school, I was able to pick back up Interior Design. Blue Bird Design Co was opened in 2020 and offers a unique and easy approach to interior design. Growing up I always believed that only the well to do could afford design help and Blue Bird strives to change that. I believe creating the perfect space should be fun, inspiring and ultimately result in a place you never want to leave. I work with every style and every budget to create unique and functional design.
“Good design you can see, Great design you can feel.”
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
dax + jade was created as a made to order company, however as it started to grow, it grew into a few retail locations. At first they were a lot of fun and very rewarding. Walking in to check on displays and seeing something you created from scratch is all it sounds and more. After about a year and with covid approaching I found it challenging to keep up with the yoyo of the retail demand world. My products were no longer made to order but now I was having to keep up with what “might” sell this week, over producing some items, only to throw them out months later. The constant cost of displays moving around the store and decorations for holidays was a lot for a super small, year old company. I found myself no longer joyful or passionate and no longer consistent and to my own standards. After deciding to pull from the retail locations and focus on how I designed the company to be in the first place was the best move i ever made.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I have loved growing in and being a part of my local community. I have found that when you offer a quality product (or service) with impeccable customer service and stay consistent with both you will eventually build a repeat customer base of loyal and happy customers.
