Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Sems. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amy, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge I face in profitability is working in an oversaturated market. There are a lot of extremely talented music creators out there, so the competition is fierce. It’s also an industry where “who you know” really does make a difference, so another key factor is building relationships that are authentic and mutually beneficial.

Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always loved writing songs and playing instruments, but I started really pursuing songwriting professionally during 2020. During this time, like in so many other industries, a lot of work shifted remotely, which made it a lot easier for me to work in this field. I started off taking classes on production and songwriting, but also learned a ton just by “doing” and collaborating with others. Over time I was able to refine these skills enough to start selling and licensing songs and vocals for business and media projects needing music! I think what sets my work apart is being able to pair creativity with organization. My clients know they can depend on me to really listen to their needs and supply something both musically compelling and relatable.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When I first started creating music, I was largely creating pop! I enjoy listening to that style personally, so it seemed natural to create that style as well. However, I found that my natural singing voice tends to work better for singer-songwriter/folk styles! The first two sync placements I got were both in this style, so being willing to try something different literally paid off! I have since created a second moniker for pop music so that I can play in the best of both worlds.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Something that I think is really cool about my business is that I haven’t had to pour a lot of capital into it. I spent a few hundred dollars creating some initial songs with well established Producers that I was able to use as “examples,” and then from there I’ve been able to pitch song ideas to Producers and collaborators to help me create new songs. We then split any earnings we make from the music.
