We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Sage & Roni Nocon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy Sage below.
Amy & Roni, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
Passionate for helping children and families, we became school counselors nearly 17 years ago. Throughout our careers, we have worked with all age groups in school settings. Although we felt that we had a positive impact on the mental health of our students, we always felt a calling to make a difference on a greater scale. Our hope is that ParentingEQ and our resources will set up this generation of children to be successful and happy in this world as they navigate the unique challenges of the 21st century.
Amy & Roni, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
ParentingEQ is a 6 box subscription series with a purpose! The mission of ParentingEQ is to build emotionally healthy kids and families through parent led social-emotional learning activities. These activities focus on emotional intelligence skills critical to leading successful lives: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation and social skills. Topics include growth mindset, stress management, problem solving, friendship, impulse control, resiliency, diversity, and more. Each box contains 4-5 developmentally appropriate activities including books, games, and tools for parents to work through. Detailed instructions and parenting tips are included. We are most proud of the fact that all of the items provided have been carefully selected and developed by us, school counselors and parents who are passionate about being proactive in order to improve children’s emotional well-being.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
In 2018 we started working together as co-counselors at Design39 Campus, a TK-8th grade school in the Poway Unified School District. We quickly realized that we shared a passion for social emotional learning, but saw the need to provide parents with additional resources to teach these skills at home. We noticed an increase in children who were showing signs of stress and anxiety, as well as self-harm and suicidal ideation, and we knew we had to act. Fortunately, we were at a design thinking school that encourages their students and staff to think creatively and out of the box. Our wheels started turning on how we could make a difference, and the idea for ParentingEQ was born.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been to use our professional and personal relationships to network. We take advantage of any opportunity to tell our story, to describe the benefits of ParentingEQ, and to give back to the community through parent education workshops and free resources available on our website and in our blog. Due to the fact that there is such an evident need for children to access mental health resources, and that we are facing a mental health crisis, we have continued to outreach and partner with a variety of organizations, parents groups, and school systems to get the word out about our products.
