We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Rowan Abs Csc. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents raised me in an environment where it was ok, and comfortable to talk about my body, what bodies did, and natural normal functions. My dad is a retired OB-GYN and my mom is a psychotherapist. I have many memories of overhearing my dad on a phone call with a patient, asking about things like periods, vaginal discharge, etc. It was normal. It was part of being a girl/woman. I don’t ever remember having “the talk,” but I know that I learned that information, organically, over the years, without shame, guilt or judgment. As far back as middle school, my friends asked me all the questions that they weren’t comfortable asking their own parents, or doctors. I would ask my dad, and bring back the answers, until I started learning the answers myself. It was never embarrassing or uncomfortable for me to talk about women’s (or men’s) bodies, sex, touching, bodily functions. I am 100% positive that growing up in that environment set the stage for what I was going to do for my career as a sexologist.
Amy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
A OB-GYN and a psychotherapist fell in love, got married and had a baby….that baby was me :) That’s the joke I make when people inevitably ask, how did you decide to become a sexologist! In 2008, I left HR and corporate America to become a stay at home mom. Shortly afterwards, I discovered direct sales and became an intimacy toy consultant. During my 13 years as an intimacy toy consultant, I was in top 3% of my company and built a $200k team. But, what truly inspired me to take the next step and become a certified sexologist was the women I would speak with at my events. Frequently, at the end of an event, a woman would shyly come up and say, “you are the first person I have ever felt comfortable enough to ask this…” and then share something deeply intimate, and something I knew that a product couldn’t fix.
In October 2022, I started the Mastery program at Sex Coach University and graduated in 15 months as a Board Certified Clinical Sexologist and Sex Coach. This is my true passion and talent: supporting my clients at the deepest level with their intimacy challenges, while providing evidence based sexual wellness and education.
One of the main things that separates me from many other sexologists in the space is my approachability. When you search for intimacy coaches or sexologists, often you will find many who are experts in kink, tantra, spiritual sex, ENM and other niches. Those are all amazing avenues of exploration, but for the “regular” mom, married for awhile, with some kids and the challenges of an every day life, they can’t relate to that. That’s why I’m the Suburban Sexologist, I’ve been married for 20 years, I have 3 kids, I’m an entrepreneur and living the same everyday life as so many other women out there. I get it…I’m in the trenches too. I know what it’s like to juggle all the things and struggle to find energy for intimacy. I also walk the walk and can teach you how to do it.
In my private Suburban Intimacy practice, I offer 1:1 talk based intimacy coaching to individuals and couples who are looking to overcome intimacy challenges or learn how to enhance their current intimate experiences. I offer educational workshops, and carry a line of curated intimacy products. I am the co-host of the Sensational Sex Podcast with another sexologist-mom, Dr. Trina Read.
The thing I’m the most proud of is the beautiful transformations I have been able to witness through working with my clients. Helping a newly divorced and dating 60 year old break out of her shell and experience amazing orgasms for the first time, to helping a younger woman overcome painful intimacy and finally enjoy pleasure with her new husband has been such an honor!
In 2025, I am beyond thrilled to embark on a partnership with Michelle Zinney, owner of Zinovations MedSpa in Milton, Georgia. We are combining their cutting edge physical and medical treatments with my skills and support of the emotional and relationship side of sexual dysfunction, to launch IntimaCare Wellness, the first comprehensive, holistic sexual wellness clinic in the Southeast, if not the entire US.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I started my sexology certification program, I simultaneously started working on pivoting from my direct sales business into my coaching business. Moving away from direct sales was intimidating because I had always had a map to follow, a mentor to lead me, and an entire sisterhood to support me.
Building a coaching business felt very daunting, and lonely. Initially I joined a program to build a coaching business online, and I worked so, SO hard for well over a year to build an online presence. Unfortunately, because I talk about sex, online, there are many, MANY unforeseen barriers, from being shadowbanned on social media, domains being blocked, challenges running facebook ads and more. For an early stage entrepreneur with limited funds, many of these early initiatives went nowhere and ended up as costly learning experiences. There were some benefits in each one, mostly finding professional connections and relationships and starting to build my own community of support.
Halfway through 2024, I decided to pivot hard out of building online and into raising my visibility in my local community. I started attending many local networking events, talking to people face to face and letting them know that I existed, that what I did existed, and educating people on what that was and what it looked like.
That pivot was the right move, and ultimately led to meeting my new business partner, Michelle Zinney at Zinovations. We are building IntimaCare Wellness together and this will completely transform how sexual dysfunction is supported, by bringing the full spectrum of care under one roof.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The most helpful way to succeed in my field is to get out from behind the screen and meet people face to face, where they are. COVID helped us all learn that it was possible to completely run a business remotely. However, in person contact is invaluable and builds relationships and trust in a different way.
