We were lucky to catch up with Amy Mortera recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Amy Bayless Brand is made possible by the gifted hands of each local weaver and tailor on our team. The products go through many hands to complete. This takes so much thought and care. It’s what makes each piece so special. The time spent. The slowest and most meticulous attention to every detail. Creating limited collections and custom garments is our thing. I wanted to support artisans right here in Kansas City and pay them really well for their impeccable work. I’m tired of “local” not really being local, so at Amy Bayless we are doing our part to change that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Amy Bayless is a local Kansas City brand. We specialize in handwoven accessories and garments both rtw and custom. Our team of highly skilled local artisans is comprised of hand/weavers and tailors. Creating lasting pieces that don’t get thrown away is at the core of what we do. Creating garments that fit, are timeless, and just straight up feel good is the goal.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I have paid for everything I’ve needed out of pocket this entire time. It’s the way I started my other business, Sparrow Weaving 7 years ago, and have continued in the same manner with Amy Bayless.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a previous shop called Brightside Gallery in Waldo previously. It was tough but I had to close my doors two years after opening. I learned so much from the whole experience and I’ve carried the lessons with me.
